Title: Sonosax lemo-mod?!?
Post by: Brian Skalinder on December 08, 2003, 08:40:29 AM
I've heard tell the Sonosax SX-M2 may be modified to run active caps without the mic bodies.  Is this true?  Anyone know where to find details on this mod?  Or who performs it?  Anything at all?!?

I think you have to buy it with the lemo connectors instead of the XLR's. If you check out the user manual, it lists a couple of other model numbers.....I believe the lemo version is the SX-ML.

this may or may not answer your questions, but here it goes.

these photos are the inside of a Beyer MV-100, which is pretty much identical to the Sonosax physically.

if i were to do something similar (which i have been considering ever since i got my Beyer) to what you're describing, i would do the following:

1. as you can see the XLR input (bottom) are soldered onto the PC board.  you can replace these with LEMO connections, BUT do not solder the connections (See #2).

2. take the circuitry from your mic bodies and put them inside the SX-M2. perhaps somewhere in that big empty space you see in the Right.jpg.  i would use something like a hot glue gun & some plastic gadgets to elevate the Mic Body Circuitry above the PC board.  i guess it would depend on how large your Mic Body Circuitry is, b/c the battery holder for the MV-100/SX-M2 takes most of the "empty space" i mentioned.

3. make the following connections. LEMO input > Mic Body Circuit input and Mic Body Circuit output > PC board where the original XLR connection was.

all the above mentioned connections are basically 3 wires for the 1, 2 and 3 pins.

i'm going to do it after i purchase a second pre. (for taper friendly bands) and use the Beyer exclusively for stealthing.

i run the AT853 cardioids (the real AT, no the SP model), and i have to have the AT8533 phantom power module, which sticks out 4.5" from the pre.  basically, the AT8533 is the mic "body" for my caps.   i started to think of this "mod" when i took apart the AT8533 and notice that the circuitry was SMALL.  i said to myself "hell, all i have to do is stick the circuitry inside the Beyer and put it between the mic input and the PCboard" and i don't have to worry about these damn things sticking out from the MV-100.

so, my mod project is still in the works.

>>btw, there's only one pic.

the large picture is made up of 3 parts.

Neat stuff, Marc.  Let us all know how it goes if you do it!  Only catch for me is I don't want to hack my CMC6 bodies (nor purchase new ones just for stealthing).  Hmmmmm...

From Sonosax....

The SONOSAX SX-M2 , stereo MIC/LINE preamplifier with 48V mic power, standard , including the KCY connector is available, the price is : 1'060.-USD
Delivery time : 2 weeks
Shipment and transport insurance : included

The modification in existing units : 135.-USD

The KCY connector is more like an adaptor, not the cable.

Thanks, Rick!  So I figure I just crew my existing KCY cables onto the Sax connectors instead of the mic bodies.  Nice!

yep, they also make them for the nuemann's... I think the bodies still sound better but as far as compact setups go this is pretty sweet!

I'm not sure. I gave up on the MK4 > KCY > Sonosax idea when I saw how much a KCY cable was  :o

but sonosax does the mod, so you should contact them if you have more questions.

just out of curiousity would this setup use the lc3ka cables or would it involve a different set?
