Title: Calibrating 248>minime>m1?
Post by: Kevin on November 13, 2003, 04:23:03 PM
I read the sonic sense page but im still a little confused.  The 248 doesnt have any lights to let you know when its hitting overs, so my question is how would I calibrate my rig? would I just pay attention to the levels on the M1?
thanks
Kevin

crank the 248 all the way up...

then adjust the calpots on the minime while watching the levels on the m1

Personally, I completely disagree with this suggestion when the m248 is involved.  I have quite a bit of experience w/ the m248 and m148 paired w/ an AD500e and with the modSBM-1.  In either case, I much prefer to run as low of a gain setting on the 248 as possible.  Unlike the Grace pres, the 248 does not sound its best at high gain settings.  It becomes overly bright, and often harsh in the high end when you crank it up.  When running the 248 w/ my Apogee, I crank the Apogee all the way up, and apply as as little gain as necessary with the 248.  Personally I would shoot for a calibration that allows you to achieve 0db on the M1 w/ 1/4 to 1/2 full gain on the 248 at concert levels.  Ideally, I'd shoot for more like 1/4 full as opposed to 1/2.

preciate the advice mitch.  I just sent it in to get checked by Doug, and will run it for the first time on the 30th for panic.  Im thinking im going to play around with it and try both suggestions and see what I like the best and since there will be tons of tapers and patchers I know that if I dont like one set I can just get it from someone else.

What is the run time on the 248?

Ask Doug what he thinks- then tell us what he said!

I'll go along with what Mitch said.  My only experience with the 248 is NOLA '02 where I ran 41>248>ad1000.  I set the ad1000 to -4 on the input dial and had to run both units wide open to get enough gain.  The results were on the harsh & bright side.  Sounded to me like the 248 was being pushed a little too hard.  Afterwards, I inquired with other 248 users and was told to run the ad1000 at the +10 input setting and the 248 at 12 o'clock or less on the dial...

so the 248 has a gain dial, and the 148 is 20db?

Doug will do the 148 at different gain settings depending on how you want it.  I would recommend the 4022 users get him to up it above 20dbs if possible.

The 248 has gain dials and multiple settings for hpf.

I just e-mailed him and when I get a response ill post what he said.  I also asked him what he would suggest setting the gain at on the 248 when calibrating it with the minime. ;D
