Effect of Splitting Line Level Signal??
« on: December 12, 2003, 04:06:59 PM »
Quick question...if i wanted to split a line-level signal out of a pre to compare a/ds will there be any negative effects??  I know that there was some questions with phantom power as to splitting a mic level signal into two pres...but for a line level signal, is just as simple as building some XLR or 1/4" or RCA Y adapters??  Thanks in advance

Dunno the answer to your question, but...what ADCs are you going to compare?

Well...not sure quite yet...but I'm about to pick up a firwire 410, and will want to see how it compares to some other adc my buddies run (mod-sbm, ad1000, ad2k)...I will be sure to post samples once I get the 410 and the chance to do this....

My understanding is that in general it's ok to to split line level signals once or even twice. You run into impedence related problems if you start splitting it too many times. I've used a passive splitter and not had any trouble splitting one line level signal and sending it to two to three different line level inputs.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
