Back to basics

Recently i've come into a bit of money, so hope to finally purchase some bootlegging equipment i've wanted for quite some time.

The only problem is, i have no idea what i'm doing! I've heard talk of 'DAT Recorders' before, but i've no idea what they are!  :P

Also, if i was to buy one kick-ass microphone, would it matter what i was to record the show with?

I'm sure there's more i need to know, but as i said, i have no idea what i'm doing really!  :-\

For setups w/ one mic, the R0de NT4 isn't too bad...

2 mics is a way better rig though... much more versatility.  

With one mic, you will get the upgrade bug really quick, if you start to love the hobby...

how much you wann spend?  Do you want hi-fi, lo-fi,...state of the art or the dying dat community.

Let us know and believe yu'll get opinions on what gear to look into.

Does a HD recorder necessarily have to record at higher bit depth and sample rates than DAT in order for it to be a better option?  I think not.  For me, DAT is dead except for stealth activities.  And it's dying or already dead for a lot of newcomers, as well, given the performance and price-point of the NJB3.

DAT Dead?  Not yet.
Dying?  Depends on your perspective.
Are there quality alternatives which new users should consider strongly (and are selecting frequently)?  Absolutely.

IMO in order for a HD recorder to be "better" than DAT to the point of making DAT no longer a viable media it sure as hell better do 24/96. I'm not talking about transfers or any of that, just as strictly as a recording media.

I'll give you dying. All I know is I've been waiting on a HD recorder for over 2 years and we still haven't gotten a working unit out in the field.
