Title: Happy New Year. Annual reminder to BACK UP YOUR DATA!
Post by: morst on January 09, 2019, 01:34:18 AM
Get another drive. Copy everything important.
If you don't have your data on at least two drives, it's not backed up.
If you move photos from your phone to your computer, and then delete them from your phone, they are not backed up.
If you only have your data on two drives, and the building they are kept in is destroyed, your data might be lost. A third drive at an "off site" location is very highly recommended.
That's the short version of my annual data sermon.

In other time-based news, I'll also suggest that males check their balls monthly for any changes which might be symptomatic of testicular cancer. Dunno if you remember a taper named Steve Propp, but TC killed him. That makes me mad.

In addition to multiple HDDs, I use BackBlaze...

Cloud is cool for availability, but I can't see using it for mass storage of large items yet.

You gonna upload a terabyte to the cloud on your home connection? The cost per 1 terabyte of hard drive storage (spinning rust) is down to about $16-20 if you buy 4TB drives on sale. The cost per TB of SSD is coming down rapidly too. Just a year ago they were $275-300/TB best deal, and now it's a little more than half of that!

I will note that I have a great deal of respect for Backblaze because they publish their drive reliability reports regularly, and those are SUPER useful.

RAID @ home for redundancy.

Have 2 identical drives, every month, I back up every 1st and 31st off-site. Any other ideas?
