Post-JB3 Recommendations....

So, yeah, they've been great little grey boxes, but I can begin to see the sun setting on them (I've got two, one to run SBD should the need arise). Looking in the mid 500's price-wise, and 24 bit, while it'd be nice, isn't completely an issue for me (yet).

iRiver?
Back to DAT?
MicroTrack? (although the scuttlebutt on these isn't all that hot)
Wax Cylinder?

Pardon my asking, it's just that I've not really been keeping up to date with all of the recent devices flooding the market. I've been set with the JB's for a while now, but I think it might be time to start edu-macating myself on what's out there, and what post-JB3 folks have been happy with.

Regarding 16 bits - - IMO....there has yet to be a JB3 killer...(for my applications)

Seems like h120 comes pretty close though...

That's sort of my fear, and while I'd like to kid myself, there's no way I'm ready to drop on a 722 or any of that ilk.

I thought Microtrack but there was some issue with it that got me not to consider it....

So here I am with my JB3....which I love expect for the shitty, crappy, horrible Creative software that pisses me off.  I really want something the PC can find without software.....I've been looking at an iriver H120...or H320

the only "issue" when using a MT and new firmware is seamless split
all other issues have been taken care of

That includes the problem with the input jack cracking from the board.......??

Seamless split shouldn't be an issue for me...I don't think I ever recorded anything over 2 hours...

MT's can be had on ebay for a good price ~ $300

how bout a marantz box?  660, 671...

that's what I've been thinking about.  I loved the JB3 for a long time but they seem to unstable to me know.  I've had so much trouble the last month I'm a little gun shy about an other one.

The 3.5mm (1/8 inch) input jack on any recorder is not as durable as the
7mm (1/4 inch) or XLR jacks.  Intermittant contact is the most
common problem that develops after some use.

That said, it's only the Edirol R-09 that has a major problem with
the 3.5mm mic input.  Edirol tried to cut corners with the way
the jack is attached to the circuit board, and it's all too easy to
break it loose.  Edirol has been OK with repairs under warranty,
but it's a problem that could have been avoided with a different
design.  Owners of the Edirol R1, for example, have not reported
a great number of 3.5mm jack failures.

Other recorders with 3.5mm input, such as the Sony Hi-MD

use any of these devices for years before a problem develops.

The Microtrack 2496 is noteworthy because it has both 3.5mm
(unbalanced) and 7mm (balanced) mic inputs.

i went with the hd-p2.. way more than what you stated you wanted to spend yet it's nice..
I'm still getting use to it myself as it's no jb3 but having the preamp is kind of nice and it doesn't sound too bad if you want an all in one. Or get a modded one which i have no idea what they cost. a stock just went on here for 750 or 725. New as in you open the box is around 900-1k
I like mine and that's my 2 cents heh
