i helping a friend put together his first rig. open taping rig.
budget is around 1k, could be a bit more.
i reccomended after listening and reading that he go for the beyer MC930 (especially if he can get that sweet price)
so that is between $700 and $765 for mics leaving say $3-400 for everything else.
accessories i know can add up, but i'm pretty sure we can get that done on the cheap between the two of us, so what box?
I really dig the fr2le and am kind of leaning towards that if i can find it cheap on ebay, but any other suggestions would be great.

$300-$400 isn't really a whole lot to get "everything else".
You could get a used UA-5 for pretty cheap (even the modded ones are going for pretty cheap these days). and that will provide you with phantom power, a decent pre, and not bad A/D conversion. all you'd need is a cheap bit bucket. a used jb3, iriver, or MT (I or II) should do the trick there.

Peluso CEMC6>(insert your favorite mod here) Marantz PMD 660
Best thousand bucks you could spend. Anything else is going to be a sacrifice somewhere.

Pick up a stock FR2LE from Ebay & you'll be close to budget. Just add CF & batts.

I've been running them into a ACM PMD660 and they do sound nice, especially with the Hydra cables. ;D

thats what im thinking, just wanted to see if there were other ideas out there. the ua-5 could be a good suggestion.
also, i kind of dig that set up illconditioned hangs from the ceiling. R0-9 and a battery box is pretty nifty.
oh yeah, we want 24 bit, so the 660 is out.

There is a company selling the FR2LE's on ebay for relativly cheap. I think I paid 470ish after shipping and taxes. His prices have jumped a bit in the last few weeks or so though...

I'll add my vote for the FR2LE. Super easy to use. Sound pretty good stock (Have Busman mod it when more $$ comes around).
I just got the FR2LE and love it. I'm going to hopefully upgrade my mics soon (running the Oktavas for now).
My budget for mics is about $750. So I thinking the MC930's or Peluso CEMC6's. I wouldn't mind having active cables so I'm leaning towards the Pelusos. It sounds like the active cables should be out sooner than later.

the fr2le is a good option because it does not need modded. Down the line you might want to mod it up, but for now it will do the trick..
I like the beyer's far more than the Peluso's. I think the Peluso sub-cards sound great, but the rest of the caps do absolutly nothing for me...
But hey, that is why there are so many mics in this hobby, we all have different tastes...

I currently run mc930 > oade HDM fr2le.
very happy w/this combo.
beyer vs. peluso ?
no contest. the peluso's are more universal w/their modular system. and the promise of more to come is nice. but card for card...., the beyers sound far more natural and real.
so you get the beyers...., now you need a deck.
If you go Fostex..by the time you buy that deck and an 8gb CF card, you are at around $550.
If you dump a couple hundred more into this...., then you are looking at many more options.
the YS has been chalk full of great deals lately.

i'm glad you guys said it first, but the pelusos don't hold a candle to the 930's, to my ears.

Thanks for the input everyone. I will certainly have to give a listen to some MC930 recordings.
Active are nice, but not if I have to give up sound quality.

Or you could have busman mod your mc012 to the dorsey mod and get the fr2le modded as well. Killer modded rig w/out all that much cash...

Good idea, but I've been running this setup for a few years and want to try something completely different. ;D
