the typical tapers section a a big arena?
My stand goes up 9' which is usually always high enough, but I have an extention that gives me another 3 feet, so I can go up 12' if needed.

I go by the rule of as low as possible to get exactly what I want. So, about 9 ft from a moe section, about 10 ft for a phish show etc. I find that sound is generally meant to sound best at head level or slightly higher depending on venue configurations etc.

depends on the room and the system. i think a foot or two above head height should be ok.

I've found a relationship between stand height and bass response on my recordings.
Often you can get better bass by staying low. When I tape with omni's, I try to move the microphones up a bit. Thus reduces chatter etc... while at the same time cutting some of the bass the omni's emphasize.

Calico is dead on... run higher to dempahsize bass but be careful not to run too high. 9' or so is plenty

my name is treetop and i'm higher than you'll ever be.
