Title: new OPPO deck
Post by: Nick's Picks on March 15, 2008, 09:22:42 PM
http://www.oppodigital.com/

the 983
Interestingly...the 980 passes what it refers to as "dsd" over HDMI.
my best guess is that its DSD>PCM (like the 970/971) does and then it passes that.

when will someone make an HDMI DAC ?
other than a receiver

hmm, so does one need a HDMI receiver that can take a DSD signal then? (assuming that it is not doing DSD>PCM before outputting) AFAIK, all the players that could output DSD so far would only do it over an encrypted and proprietary connection (usually 1394?) to a receiver of the same brand that was designed to work with that player. I think I remember seeing a Denon player that would output DSD to a Denon receiver over an encrypted connection in Stereophile a while ago??

That would be pretty cool if DSD players would allow output of the raw bitstream, but with Sony at the helm somehow I have a hard time believing that will ever be the case.  :P

Looks interesting, thanks for sharing! +++

upon further reading, it says it does pass DSD.  but I dont buy it.
so you'd need any receiver that could take DSD over HDMI and then you're good.

Other than that, the denon you mentioned and the Sonyxcd9000 > strada7/9000 are the only decks I'm aware of under $10k

Why not?  It's in the HDMI 1.2 spec to be able to pass DSD -

So....does that mean I can burn DSD files to a DVD and this will play them?

I seriously doubt it.  The disc would have to be authored as a SACD.

my Pioneer 58AV will pass DSD via HDMI.  I believe the new Oppo 980H does as well, but I don't believe the new 983 does.  I was going to get it until I read no DSD via HDMI.

A new Pioneer Blu Ray player MAY play SACD and DVD-A.  If it does and is out befoer the Marantz 8002....I'll be getting rid of the 58AV (been an excellent player so far).

So this thing basically just plays SACD and DVD-A?
