EDIT:
Ok so I am about ready to pull the trigger, and I wanted to ask peoples opinions of where I should buy it.
Is there a particular online retailer that people prefer to purchase the 7 series from? What are some of your experiences? Does anyone give any extra incentive to buy from them?
I also have 2 local retailers that will sell it to me for the same price as online.
What do you all think?

Hey Folks,
It looks like my AKGs are gonna sell, so I am about ready to make the move to the SoundDevices 7xx. I would like peoples opinions on which way to go. I will never use the full 40Gigs of harddrive with the 722, and I have heard that the 702 burns way less battery power. I have about 24Gigs of Flash memory right now, and it is very cheap to get more.
Are there any issues with the 702 with certain flash cards? (To my knowledge all other CF recorders have issues with certain cards)
The only real benefit I see the 722 is the fact that you can record to the harddrive and back that up with flash, if I am correct. Another factor is that I would be buying the 722 used, or the 702 new.
Please share opinions, thoughts, and such.
Thanks,
Joe

buy a new 702 and with the money saved by 2 16g cards and be happy.

This chart suggests the power consumption is the same with flash and hard drive:

Yeah I don't get super long runtimes on my batteries or anything. Around 5.5 on 6600mAh with phantom on, stealth mode. That said, I would buy a 702 again even if I could afford the 722. If you want to back up recordings, you can connect a CF reader by firewire and record to 2 cards at once.

702 for sure... no moving parts = warm fuzzy...

Right but the unit in the test is a 744T and from what I have heard the 744 and 722's spin up the hard drive regardless if you are recording to the Hard drive or not. I would guess this is why the power consumption is so similar.

I just had the same exact decision about a month ago & went with the 702. Best taping purchase I have ever made, I can't believe how nicely made these things are! Plus I picked up a 32gb CF card for $140, no problems running the card at all.

either way, a sound investment. money wont be lost.

I love the 722 nice to have the hd and the card for back up.. and when stealth put a dummy card in the cf slot and if popped handum' the card ;-) Show on drive!
A :D

A static shock won't kill the 7xx hard drive but cards are susceptible. I haven't heard of a single failure of either with the 7xx.

Alright so dumb question I guess but I'll ask anyway. How much are the batteries for these guys, and are there other options out there?

Ok so yes I am a douche bag, I have found plenty of threads with the information I need.
Could this 1800emart battery really be ok to use? It's half the price of the other options. That worries me.

Over the years, I have had failed hard drives and corrupted flash cards, so, I like redundant file storage.
At the same time, I like the low-heat, low power dissipation of recording on a flash card.
I also like to be able to go on a long trip (without my laptop) and have plenty of storage space.
Therefore, I have upgraded my internal drive to 160gb and I have a 160gb external:

I record on the flash card, then copy the files to both the internal and external drives.
Works for me.....
(p.s. I frequently record 4 tracks of 24/96 on a 744)

I prefer the 722 because with an 80G HD it will hold an entire festival without me having to bring anything else to "dump" the cards to. Same goes for tour. At some point I'll install a solid state drive to replace the current rotating drive - that will eliminate any possibility of mechanical failure.
Also I'm getting old and lazy so I tend to like fewer things I have to keep track of. You can pop a card in the 702 before you leave the house for one show, but for a weekend you need to remember to bring a few of them. To me the internal drive is insurance against forgetting media or having to swap media.

Well, I would've recommended Cascade if they were still in biz, but I think your best bet might be Trew Audio in Nashville. If you can get it locally and not pay sales tax, then all the better. :)
