Title: so what do I DO with these raw files now?
Post by: ozarkbilly on March 24, 2008, 12:20:36 AM
Just taped my first show this past Tuesday.  I think it turned out decent, pretty chatty in parts though.  I've just got the files on my SD card in my R-09 that I ran open CA ST-11 > CA ST-9000 > R-09, and I also taped with an Iriver H120 in st***th mode just for practice (CSB w/batt box > H120).  What do I use to chop them up in tracks, flac conversion, all that stuff?  What are the basics if I just want to track them and upload them, without any further tinkering with them?

are they 16 bit files? if so it is easy. download cdwave
http://www.milosoftware.com/cdwave/

it is a basic tracking tool. just insert the whole file and split where desired. save as wave files.

next i use the traders little helper to encode to flac.
http://tlh.easytree.org/

with this one program, it gives you the ability to encode wav>flac and decode also. you can create checksums such as flac ffp files and md5. it has many other tunctions i don't use. this is all without doing any "post mixing" so they are just as recorded. good luck ;D

track it, flac it, sell it to the butcher in the store.

I noticed CD Wave has an option to save as flac.  Is there a reason not to do it, and save as wav and then convert to flac in TLH?

I was in your position a couple of months ago - with the same equipment. I use the following:

Audacity (free) http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I use this to boost the levels when the tape turns out quieter than I thought it would - as they say, better to boost in post, than have a distorted tape. You can also add a fade in and fade out. This is all easily done and you export the finished wav for track splitting. I recently also used it to boost the right channel, which was at a lower level than the left - useful.

CD Wave - linked above - for track splits. I haven't tried the export as flac option - I presume it will give you the option to save as the different flac levels?

Trader's Little Helper - for converting to flac and creating checksums.

...and don't forget to keep a master copy and a working copy. Good luck!

I save FLACs out of CDWave at Level 8 with no problems.
