i recently read the JB3 FAQ on here and realized it said i shouldnt be using mic in. i have been using mic in for a while. im using church audio cards > STC-9000 preamp. if i try to use optical in or line in it the signal is very weak. is there something obvious i might be doing wrong or is mic in right to use with the setup?

The FAQ is right. "Mic-in is known to suffer from nasty artifacts like hard drive whine and a high noise floor."
I have no first hand experience from the STC-9000, but I was under the impression that the output signal is hot enough. Did you crank it up all the way, and maxed the line-in gain on the JB3 when testing? Is the battery in the preamp still good?
Paging Mr Church, maybe he can tell about the output?!
I noticed another taper called "ninehi", running a similar rig:

Maybe he can share his experiences? He's registred here, but hasn't logged in since 2006:

There are also a few others here using similar gear:

When i use my 9000/JB3 combo at rock concerts, I will set the switch to +10dB and crank that knob all the way. I have the JB3 set at line-in, 48K, and 0 gain. I usually peak around -6dB and add gain in post. For acoustic show, I will use the +30dB and add gain as needed. I've noticed that the 9000 required quality 9V batteries and fresh ones at that. I've tried using cheapies and I will not get the gain that i need compared to, say, duracel batteries. If you can try differenct cables and/or recorder? Maybe there is a bad link somewhere.
