Title: UA5 matrix help/suggetions?
Post by: mikesalvo on March 30, 2008, 09:25:53 PM
so I did a search and nothing really surfaced. If Im missing a thread, please fill me in. Ive never ran a matrix with my UA5 but would really like to, maybe tmw. night. Anyone have any suggestions as to things I should do/bve careful of? for instance, should I run my mics in the XLR ins as usual, or should I use RCA adapters and run them inot the back. My major concern here is one source overpowering the recording and coming out with something unlistenable...

you need to run the mics into the xlrs, low-Z, with phantom power on.  Use the RCA's in the back for a line level SBD.   The RCA's in the back are not a sutable input for microphones...

Best method I came up with was to run the mics so my recorder got about -6db levels, then bring in the sbd so you start to peak at -3 to 0db

Gives a pretty good balance for an on the fly mix

I remember not turning the single gain knob past 1 on the rca inputs and running mics also to peak at -6dB like bhtoque said.
Peace

I've always thought of running a matrix on UA-5 but i've heard of delay issues caused by the distance of the mics to the source of sound. I prefer to run two different recorders (one on the UA-5 for audience and the other feeded by the SDB) so I don't screw up the recording, then I mix (matrix) both sources in post.

Wouldn't this also depend on what the UA-5 is passing the signal on to? If you are going to a two channel recorder that's one thing, you would have to mix on the fly, but if you are going to a laptop you would get four channels so you could shoot for the best levels for recording then mix them down to stereo later. Right?

I am pretty sure your alright if your 25' or less away from the stage.

no
the ua5 will not pass 2 sources without mixing them
so even if you had a laptop that could record 4 channels, you are going to get 2 channels mixed of all 4 output from the ua5

Thanks! I hadn't tried it yet myself but was planning on pulling a matrix at some point.
