Okay, so I know I've seen a good explanation of what sort of technology is involved to make the lc3's, kc-5's etc.
The MBHO's just use a mini-xlr. Do schoeps and neumann have anything fancy going or are they just proprietary and that's why they are so damn expensive?

This can be done to most capsules. The mic amp body provides the
unbalanced to balanced circuit and powers the capsule, but provides
little or no gain, many reduce the voltage level. Some capsules have
an FET buffer(the active in active cable)in them and can push a short
cable. The Panasonic caps are one example of how easy it is to bypass
the need for an amplifier body. The cable with connector to the capsule
is the "gotcha" for most capsules.... otherwise.... it is easy to do.
