Title: Which DPA stealth mics with Edirol R-09?
Post by: terabyte23 on April 04, 2008, 06:38:13 PM
I recently bought an R-09 and would like to invest in some nice DPA stealth mics to go with it.  I will mostly be recording in high-SPL situations, small to medium-size venues.  I read good things about the 4061 mics, but I think they would require a battery box (right?).  How about the 4063 - would they be able to run off the R-09's plugin power?  And if so, would that mean no battery box needed?  I would be happy to avoid battery boxes if possible.

I am a bit torn over the cards vs. omni question, but I have heard some amazing omni recordings.  I'm guessing with the levels set for high-SPL input the crowd noise will be somewhat muted as a result.

I fooled around many moons ago with some early CSB mics and a Sony WM-D3.   Then skipped over DAT and MD entirely.  Kinda fun getting back into it again - amazing equipment available these days  :D

Thanks.

Hello,
With a battery box your mics will be more suitable to handle high SPL.
The R-09 can power your mics with plugin power, but with 3v to 5v only, not the 9v like a regular bb.
If you're going to tape loud music you should consider a bb.
Hope that helps. Enjoy your gear.

The 4063 are low-DC mics needing only 3V instead of 5V(DPA4060/61/62).
http://dpamicrophones.com/module.php?MID=101&itemid=4063-BM&PID=&function=pdescription

They should work fine with plugin-power of your Edirol R-09.
I heard recordings of 4061´s(5V minimum) with plugin-power(2-3V)....it´s possible but sounds strange.

You need to do the microdot=>3.5mm(1/8")-plug-mod as these babies come with microdots(DPA sepcific termination).

DPA 4063 specifications:
Principle of operation: Pressure
Cartridge type: Pre-polarised condenser element with vertical diaphragm
Power supply: Min. 3 V - max 50 V through DPA adapter
Frequency range, ± 2 dB:
Soft boost grid: 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 3 dB soft boost at 8 - 20 kHz
High boost grid: 20 Hz - 20 kHz ±2 dB, 10 dB boost at 12 kHz
Directional characteristics: Omnidirectional
Equivalent noise level A-weighted: Typ. 26 dB(A) re. 20 µPa (max. 28 dB(A))
Equiv. noise level ITU-R BS.468-4: Typ. 38 dB (max. 40 dB)
Total harmonic distortion (THD): <1% THD up to 123 dB SPL peak; <1% THD up to 120 dB SPL RMS sine
Preamplifier frequency range: 20 Hz to 50 kHz (+0 dB/-3 dB)
Output impedance: 30 - 40 Ohm
Cable drive capability: Up to 300 m (984 ft)
Supply voltage: 3 - 50 V through DPA adaptor
Microphone length: 12.7 mm (0.5 in)
Max. SPL, peak before clipping: 138 dB
Weight: <7.5 g (0.26 oz) incl. cable and MicroDot connector
Cable length: 1.8 m (5.9 ft)
Dynamic Range: Typ. 97 dB
S/N ratio, re. 1 kHz at 1 Pa (94 dB SPL): 68 dB
Connector: MicroDot
Sensitivity, nominal, ±3 dB: 6 mV/Pa; 44.5 dB re. 1 V/Pa

There are extremely small 12V-battery-boxes available at soundprofessionals.com. Consider using 3.5mm-modded-DPA4061´s in combination with a miniature 12V battery-box..smaller than a car remote(mine at least).

Anything new on the battery box front since this was last replied to when pairing DPA 4061s w/ a R-09HR? Suggestions are welcome

Has anyone actually tried these on the Edirol R09?

The Edirol supplies 2.5v through a 2.2k resistor.  Note that is you connect the mic, it will take current, and drop the voltage a bit.  The *regular* 4060,61 need 2.7v and take a current of 0.7mA.  I have not tried them with the Edirol, but clearly there is not enough juice for 4060,61, at least by spec.  I wonder how much current the 4063 take?

I'd use the battery box.  I'd rather be sure I was ready for the high SPLs, then find out afterward that I wasn't...and still need to get a battery box.

The extra bulk it adds to your rig is negligible.

I use DPA 4060 > BB > R-09.

4060/61/62 sound strange withOUT a bbox and plug-in power only on the R09.
I heard several recordings on dimeadozen made with the above configuration.
I guess they need 5V at least as written in the specs for showing their full potential.

My local DPA dealer in Vienna told me 4063´s are the way to go for plugin power.
Seems nobody ever tried these 4063 mics  ;D.
4063-SPL-handling(138db) is between 4060(134db) and 4061(144db) according to the specs above.

Hey, friend!
Where have you been? No more samples? I have a few that I'd like you the hear.
Take care ;)
