Title: Newbie Here - Want to tape modern rock band at a small club Ques about equip
Post by: djspurlz on April 07, 2008, 02:48:49 PM
Hi all -

Just found this site -   I used to tape some bands back in the early 90s but it was strictly with a " cassette type " recorder.

There is a alternative /modern rock band who will be playing at a smaller club type venue that I would like to record.  the club is in the USA.

I have done a bit of research and I am narrowing my choice down for a recorder -

Marantz PMD 620   or the Olympus LS-10

both are within my budget - I am leaning more towards the Marantz

I need to make a decision rather quickly as the show is late next week.

The only other question I have  ( besides the opinions for either of these recorders is )   what external microphone ( if any ) should I get with the Marantz or the Olympus.

I will be taping this show in a more stealthy mode - so that is something to think about.

My budget for microphones - 100 -150 dollars

I just need a solid recorder to tape a live show - I dont plan on taping many other shows in the future but that could all change I guess.

Ive never been to this club - but I believe its on the smaller side prob holds 1000 or less ?

any help opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I'd like to make an order soon -  I see a sponsored site has the recorder I want - the Marantz PMD 620

By the way I also have  Sony Sound Forge 8 to help with making a recording - seems like that wouldnt be a problem to make a recording when all is said and done right ?

thanks everyone

Michael

I'd do Church Audio mics > Marantz PMD 620 with the description you gave above.

Agreed. CA makes basically the best bang-for-the-buck stealthy mics out there. Church is also a great guy to deal with.

I need to make a decision rather quickly as the show is late next week.

If you need them by next week, buying directly from Church Audio isn't a good choice.  I didn't see any Church mics for sale in the Yard Sale, but maybe some of those mics would suit your purposes (I don't know anything about mics) and get to you in time to use.

^ Good point. Chris' lead time may be several weeks.  That being said though, perhaps you could get a loaner pair from someone.

Soundprofessionals.com may be able to quickly get you a pair of mics. With your budget, I would think about getting these:

Would also need a battery box to power them though I believe.

Chris Church was selling them in Yard, not sure if he has any left.
