Title: MP-2 > AD-20 > D100 ?
Post by: hoyt on December 03, 2003, 10:54:13 PM
Is the a/d in the ad-20 worth throwing into the mix here, or is the a/d in the d100 up to the same level?  Anyone have some tapes trying to use just the a/d part of the ad-20 and not the pre?

Thanks,

Nope. No AD-20.

Nope. No AD-20.

Because you can't truly bypass the pre, or because the A/D in the d100 is just as good?

Thanks,

i would say because you can't truely bypass the pre.  That would be two pres and thats not such a great idea.  Maybe MP-2>ADC-20?  That would be a good combo.  The low end of the MP-2 and the clarity and detail of the ADC-20 would be nice.

I'm not a big fan of the adc-20.  I'll run with no A/D for a while, possibly looking at a sbm-1.  But that scares me with overloading on the bass.

I'd go with MP-2>D100 as opposed to MP-2>AD-20>D100, but that's just me.

Not a big AD-20 fan as you can tell

stock sbm-1 is not gonna overload you on the bass.

what kind of mics? you may not even overload with a mod-sbm-1.

both, I am told the a/d in the m1's and d100's are just as good as the stock sbm-1

i used both of these configs, ad20>d100 sounds pretty good, mp2>d100 sounds just about as good, i try to stay away from the adc-20, its just too harsh on the high end, no bass, way too digital

No AD-20 because of two pres, and a half-assed one in the AD-20 at that.

I run the MP-2->Mod SBM-1 and while the tapes are dark (the way I like them!), you are not overloading on the bass...

ad-20 minimum gain is 18db i believe (last i checked).     there is no way around that, and that's a big boost

go mp2 > d100

I'm in the middle of looking at new mics, right now all I have are at853s, but I don't think those will stick around more than a few months.

Well, you didn't ask but I'm gonna say it anyway.  :D  If it was me and my budget was tight, I'd sell the MP-2, sell the AD-20 (if you already have it), sell the AT853s, sell the battery box, and:

[1] upgrade mics
[2] buy a used PS-2 (several available right now in the Yard Sale)
[3] buy some line transformers for gain

and run Mics > PS-2 > line transformers > D100.  This will improve your sound much more dramatically than adding an outboard ADC and far better than the MP-2 improves the AT853s.

If my budget was not tight, I'd still do the following but my focus would be first on mics, second on outboard preamp (instead of line transformers), and third on outboard ADC.
