Title: Headphones/Reel2Reel/HiRez demo VSAC
Post by: ironbut on April 27, 2008, 08:29:29 PM
I see several questions about headphones (what's the best?) around here and if your in the market for some, or if not, I'd like to invite you tapers to the Vacuum State of the Art Conference over Memorial Day weekend. I'll have a non-profit exhibit there with members of the Headfi.org community. As a source, it'll feature reel to reel tapes from  http://www.tapeproject.com/ (http://www.tapeproject.com/) and CD/SACD and high Rez downloads through bleeding edge headphone amps. Here' the list of headphones that will be there (so far);
AKG k701
Sennheisser HD600,650,580
BeyerDynamic DT880,990
Audio Technica AD2000
Stax Omega ll
Saturday only
Ultrasone HF-1, 780
Sony CD3000, CD1700, F-1 and 7506
There will be 3 floors of audio venders, live music, seminars and workshops. It should be a ton of audio fun whether you give a hoot about headphones or not.
It's being held in Vancouver Wa (just across the river from Portland Or )
Here's a link to the conference web site;

Hope to see you there!
BTW I'll contact the organizer to see if we can do open taping (Duh,.. should have thought of that before).

I love my k701's (see my cute kid wearing them in the avitar), but the place for all your headphone answers is www.head-fi.org.

How do you think I ended up with so many cans! (member since 2003)
Seriously, I find that reading someone else's posts about how something sounds can be very misleading. There's just nothing like listening yourself. Unfortunately, lots of folks buy headphones without hearing them. And while they might be great sounding, there might be something that would suit them and their needs much better.
BTW,.. the K702's are coming (maybe this summer)

yeah, I've heard the same thing, but I thought those rumors were of a detachable cable and a slightly different look, but no significant sonic change....

I think I would shoot myself in the face if I had to endure Klaus Heynes grandstanding, pretentious jabber for any amount of time.

Stubblebine is amazing though...as is Romanowski.

Just a final bump before the Conference which happens May 24-25. There have been a few additions to the vendors, and performers who will be there. So, if you're on the fence, go to the web site and check it out again.
My headphone demo has lost a couple ( Omega ll and Ultrasone 780) but has added a few-
Grado RS-1
Beyer 770
Ultrasone Edition 9
Denon 5000 modified
Shure E500 IEM's
But, needless to say, you could easily have a packed weekend without ever putting on a pair. There have been several vendor systems which have been built for this show (on of my pals will have a speaker system driven by 18 mono 300b powered amps ( he's sweating over a pair of custom built x-overs as I type this) similar to the amplification he built for the mastering room at Stubblebine Mastering and DVD, easily the best sound I've ever heard from a recording).
So, if you can make it, it's not to be missed.
Oops, forgot to mention that one of the sources I'll be using is HiRez downloads (24/96) via an Apogee Duet in case you're wondering if the sound is Hi
Fi or just hype.
