For a receiver:

The Integra DTM-5.3 is around $400.  It has a subwoofer output and bass management.  It also has a zone2 for an extra set of speakers in another room.  It can handle any typical speaker impedance.  Really versitle reciever...

In general, I like the Cambridge Audio stuff for receivers/integrated amps (meaning, not separates).  I've also had AMC stuff I've liked, particularly if you want tubes at a fairly good price.

Probably helpful to know what you're looking for.  Receiver generally = integrated amp + tuner.  Integrated amp = preamp (multiple inputs, volume control, tone control, balance, etc.) + power amp.  Then there is the 2ch (audio) vs 5.1/6.1/7.1 stuff for home theater.

For $500 on the used market, you could probably get combo of separate preamp + power amp.  Perhaps something like the Symphonies tube preamp + a solid state amp (Rotel, Hafler, AMC, etc).  Unless you really want the space savings of an integrated, or want 5.1 for home theater, or want the tuner portion (i.e., your request for a receiver).

Lots of possibilities for $500 if you're talking used, but if you really only are interested in a receiver as your only option, that will obviously limit things.

If you wanna go Solid State... Look for a Nice used Arcam.

If all you need is an Integrated the Onkyo A-9555 is a great sub $500 brand new in the box solution.

The Sony Digital ES Receivers area  friggin' steal on the used market. You can pick up an STR-DA5000ES for next to nothing and rock way hard with a very nice sound stage indeed.

This is what I am running...
NAD T534 for cd/dvda
Sony R500 Dat player
Sony ? 300 cd player, not in use much.

I probably need a receiver or tune for the dvd/home theater system with 5.1 or something, but I will probably repair the receiver i have for that, mainly asking about music play back. and used is fine.

speakers, Polk Tower with subs, 115v 60Hz, 70 watt max
i got these half price a few years back, couldn't pass up the price.
i also have a small listening area, hell small house period. but no neighbors to bitch about the loudness either.

This has been getting some nice reviews. Definately a good option. You should really consider the A955 if you're looking at 70WRMS input on the Speakers... it's one of those things that has no right to sound like it does.  It'll be incredible at your bluegrass stuff and quite good for the rock 'n roll.

Isn't that what Damon had?

I can't remember but if I'm right, it sounded really good with his B&K speakers.

I've got an Arcam integrated setup that I just posted for sale in the Yard Sale.

http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,104702.0.html

The integrated amp sounds great alone for 2 channel playback, and then the DAVE module + 3 channel amp makes HT sound great also.

It's just an option, no pressure :)
