Hey now -
Has anybody used these mics? Are they similar, in set-up, to the Schoeps mics with an active cable between the mic cap and the mic amplifier or are they more similar to the schoeps CCM series of compact mic (CCM4)?
How do they sound? Can anyone point me to any sources on the LMA that I could check out?
Thanks

Search the archive and bt.etree.org for
nakguy
. He's put up some very sweet recordings using VM-44's especially when he was running the Portico.
I think they're fantastic sounding mics personally.

QFT!! I love them, I'm a huge milab fluffer. They are a capsule>active cable>mic body setup, not like the compact CCM or DPA 4022's.
I don't find them to sound like schoeps, more like DPAs or esp more like Neumann km140s. I ran Neumann km184/140s for a few years, so I'm very familiar with their sound. To me, the milabs are like the small diameter neumanns, but with a bit more sparkle in the highs, though still very smooth like the Neumanns. They also have a very nice, full, taut bass, whereas I find the neumanns to be just a bit looser -- not at all bad, but they seem a somewhat murky in comparison to the milabs.
I think the milabs are one of the best values in active cable mics going. Only about $1850 a pair new, which is far less than neumanns, dpas, or schoeps. Like I said, I like them a bit more than neumanns, but I'd say of the milabs are probably most comparable in sound to the neumanns.
