Title: Experience with Busman stereo ribbon?
Post by: notlance on May 30, 2008, 10:00:31 AM
Has anyone used the Busman stereo ribbon mic?  How does it sound, in particular, how's the high end?  How is its output level; is it low like most ribbons?  What’s up with the 600 ohm output impedance which seems kinds high for a ribbon?  How delicate is it?

I have a pair of BSC1 SD mics and love them, so maybe I should just take a chance and buy the ribbon.

I have the same question.  Seems there are only 3 people I can find on the forum using the Busman ribbon mic--anybody else out there using it??   I also own and like my Busman BSC1 SD mics, but was leaning towards a pair of Cascade Fat Head II's for ribbons for only a little more money.

Plenty of great samples.  It's a wonderful mic!

I am downloading one of the torrents now.  I am curious if this mic has gone head-to-head with others which are better known so that we have a baseline for comparison.

It is a re-badge of a Chinese mic sold re-badged also by a few other companies.  What distinguishes this flavor from the others?

Have you done any A/B comparisons with this mic to others, ribbons or otherwise?   I'm having a hard time finding much info--this mic seems very obscure.

Plenty of great samples.  It's a wonderful mic!

This is my first experience with a ribbon ever so I have no info on comparisons but I fell in love with it.  Of course one day I hope to have a Royer.   I'm pretty sure it's chinese made but Busman put's Lundahl transformers in it.  Might check with him.

Mark, I got a DL of your BG pull on TTD.  I have only listened to one track so far and like the sound.  It does sound very good.  And like it is worth $300.

I checked with Chris but did not get a confirmation on whether he is using Lundahl transformers.  Maybe that is considered a 'trade secret", but did not ask him if that was why he was silent on that topic.  In the absence of any A/B of the Busman stereo ribbon against other similarly priced ones, after finding a good deal on a pair of Cascade Fat heads with the Blumlein mount kit, I went for the Fat Heads.  I'd love to do an A/B against Chris' ribbon sometime.  I am very pleased with my Busman BSC1 SDC's bought from Chris, so would have pursued his ribbon further if not for the much cheaper set of as new Fat Heads (used once by prior owner) that became available.

There are a number of promising ribbons in this price range.  I asked Chris why his was so obscure, and he told me he had not promoted it much.  I'll see if he has a trial period or return policy and maybe give it a try.

Per Chris, the stock modded one does not have a transformer upgrade, but the Lundahl is available as an upgrade.  I'm giving some serious thought to getting the Busman stereo ribbon too.  I like the compact form factor of the Busman, and the flexibility of the separate mics with the Cascades.  It would sure be easier to throw the Busman stereo ribbon up in the field.
