Title: Schoeps B5's ~vs~ B5D's
Post by: Josephine on June 06, 2008, 06:09:34 PM
I need some schooling, please.
Can someone tell me under what circumstances I would use one windscreen over the other?
Here's a link to the B5D:  http://www.schoeps.de/E-2004/windscreens-foam-hollow.html (http://www.schoeps.de/E-2004/windscreens-foam-hollow.html)
I've got them both . . .  have never used the B5D's.

Windscreen W 5 D

    * for use on pressure-gradient and pressure transducers in wind.

The foam encloses an air chamber around the capsule, similar to a basket windscreen. It is highly efficient, yet it has only a slight influence on the sound.
When using CCM-L Compact Microphone, please be careful to place the W 5 D all the way onto it.
The W 5 D cannot be used with the KC Active Cable, CCM-U Compact Microphones and microphone capsules for lateral pickup (MK 6, MK 4V, MK 4VXS, MK 41V, or MK 8)), or the corresponding CCM Compact Microphones.

Dimensions: sphere with diameter 90 mm
Color: black, with additional black, porous velvet-like surface treatment
Never used either one before but checking out the link you psoted it looks like the B5D"s would be good on windy daze but not sure up to what speeds before you need dead rats also.
Peace

I believe that the Schoeps recommendations can be summarized with: B5, indoors; B5D, outdoors.  I have used the B5's outdoors and they were not much help.  For any kind of breeze outside you will need the B5D's or something like them.  None work for hurricanes.

Hey Josephine, I own the B5's,B5D's,and the W5D's.They are in order in my pics from left to right. The B5's are for indoors or they can be used outdoors with omnis with light wind. The B5D's are what I use outdoors 99% of the time.If I know there are going to be wind gust 20 mph or more I'll use the W5D's.I used to use the big DPA windscreens but I've found that the B5D's handle wind noise better.Schoeps also has the W5's which are like the W5D's in size but have no basket inside. I hope this helps.

There's a DPA screen that many schoeps tapers use. Which one is it?

Thanks-kevin
