hi,
I'll receive CA ST-11 mics next week. My "main" rig is at853 with mini-xlr connectors into a custom made 3wire battery box into R09. I also have a Denecke PS2 battery box.
My question is: can I use Denecke PS2 or the custom made battery box (with 2xMiniXLR male connectors) to power CA ST-11 Mics (they terminate with the classic 3,5mm jack)? I've got an Y cable (1x3,5mm female to 2xXLR male) that could be ok but I don't know if this cable is only for audio connection or if it is ok also to bring power from PS2 to the mics
I didn't know if this questions is for "mics & setup" or "Pre's, A/D's and Processors"...please move it to the right section in case I made mistake ;)

A PS2 is phantom power supply. You need only a battery box or the ultra nifty CA-9100 for your Church mics. They don't need phantom power.

You could use the Chruch and ATs using the PS2 but you would need phantom adaptors. Looks like your ATs are already suited for this since they have the mini-XLR connectors. You would need to talk to Chris to see just how much power his mics need and if using a Phantom Adaptor is okay, but that would also mean having your Church mics reterminated. As pointed out, you can't use the cable you aready have, you will absolutely fry your mics with a full 48v.

well, I know the best solution would be a CA 9100 but I just wanted to know if there is a way not to buy anything else and run them in some way. the main problem is that I'm located in europe: if I was in US/Canada I would have already bought a CA-9100...living in europe means +20% taxes + more shipping + duty taxes
is it possible to run ST-11 mics with the custom made 3wire battery box I have with some kind of Y cable (1x3,5mm female to 2xMini-Xlr female)??

You or someone should be able to build a custom patch cable for that practice. I have an opposite one that I use in my iRiver for plug in power for quieter shows. It would be a matter of mapping the connections and power, use a female mini jack to plug the Church mics into. I am sure if you wrote Chris he could help you with the connections if you built your own.

If your pair of ST-11's are currently joint together and terminated into a 3,5mm TRS, it would be smarter to splice them up, add two mini-XLR males, and connect them individually to the 3-bbox. Otherwise it would defeat the purpose of having a 3-wire bbox, you wouldn't benefit from the cabling being balanced. If you had thought of this before you ordered the ST-11's from Church, he could have custom modded a set for you...
If you want to run phantom, the AT853's would be much less hassle, and will probably even sound better. Just pick up a pair of AT8533's or Samson PM4:

well chris told me in PM that it is not possible....but some of you (also in PM) told me it is ??? so I don't know where the truth is! I was considering buying a ST-9100 preamp but I want to be able to use it with both sets of mics (at853 > 2 x female mini-xlr) and (CA ST-11 > 1 x male 3,5mm jack)

Have Chris reterminate one set of your mics so the both match. I don't think he charges a whole bunch to do that. I know it would be alot cheaper than buy a new pre amp.

Perhaps I'm not interpreting this correctly, but it sounds like we are missing the obvious here... If the Church mics are standard 1/8" stereo plug... plug them into R-09 "mic in" and turn on the plug-in-power. That's what it's there for, and it should work fine.
A battery box usually sends 9V to the mics, and the R-09 sends something like 3V. Sometimes you need that 9V to avoid distortion at loud shows with AT853's, but I think the Church mics will be happy with 3V. If that's not enough, then you need to make/buy a cheap battery box.
Trying to make those church mics work with your PS/2 or 3 wire battery box is trying to force a square peg in a round hole. Any effort to make that fit will cost more than a cheap battery box.

Yeah, I had both the AT853 and the CA-11 for awhile, and I agree that you should either plug the CA-11 directly into the R-09 (the CA-11 can handle high SPL with just plugin power) or get a cheap battery box from sound pro. Or the best solution would be to get a 9100, convert your AT853 to 1/8" outputs and get the Church-mod (4.7k mod) and use both mics with the 9100. That's what I did and they both worked great.

The *best* choice is to get adaptors for the 853s and run them with the PS2.
*Run the Church mics directly off of the recorder (if the power is correct) and if it isn't get an inexpensive BB,or one of Chris' pre/power units.
You have the makings right in front of you for two setups, and you'd only have to spend a little bit of money for the adaptors (and maybe a power supply for the Church mics if the plug in power won't suffice)
Don't get crazy and start cutting and chopping anything.

*You could probably sell that 3wire BB and get enought $ for the adaptors and an Soundpros BB.

Here is the deal.
My mics will work with the edirol R-09 but not very well with my 4.7k mod if I change the value of my mod resistor to 2.4k Then they work perfectly with out the need of a battery box. But you will have a higher noise floor. This might not be a problem for people that record super loud shows. Now the only issue is this when they are converted to 2.4k they dont work very well with a higher voltage of 9 volts what my 9100 preamp puts out. So the very best option for some might be to get me to make a custom pair of cables with the mic bases on them * thats where the fet is * and rematch them with your raw cardioid capsules. That way you have a pair of high spl cables and low SpL cables. BTW the reduction of the resistor at higher voltage 9 volts makes the mics more sensitive so that they will work better for acoustic shows. You gain 8 db over my 4.7k mod.
So if you want to use an edirol for very loud shows order my high sensitivity cable w/ 2.4k mod but you have to send back your capsules to be rematched with the cables. But these cables should only be used for situations where you only want an edirol and a pair of mics. Never for shows where you use my preamp. The specs are exactly the same distortion wise 0.6% at 114db at 1k.

That's a very backwards solution, you're making a detour. Just order the 9100 with mini-XLR input jacks! No need to do the 4.7k mod as long as you keep the XLR wiring on the mics intact!
