Help! I'm a newbie trying to upgrade from MD and AT822.
My first step was to get a used DAP-1. I already had a pair of Oktava MC012s (for recording acoustic guitar). So I wanted to get a UA-5 w/mods to run with this rig.
Stupidly, I didn't check with Oade before I scored a new UA-5 on eBay today (for a great price). I assumed they would mod it, but I found out too late that I was wrong.
So how else can I get it modded to run into the DAP-1, and a warm mod, too? Does anyone else do this?
Are there DIY plans somewhere? I would much rather pay someone than do it myself, but if DIY is the only option, I might tackle it. Not afraid of soldering -- just hate projects like this.
Or should I just resell the UA-5 and buy one from Oade?
Thanks!!!
The digi-mod is self-doable. There are linkeroos from less than 2-3 weeks ago within these very forums.
the diy mod is really really simple
So I can probably find the digi mod with a search, then, I gather?
What about the warm mod? Is there diy for that?
there isnt one for the w-mod, however that one is supposed to be a bit more involved.
Been searching for the digi mod on the site and can't find it. Any suggestions for the search terms?
look in the archive section, it is there
maybe have to go to pg 2 or 3
Great -- I found it. Thanks!
Now ... nobody knows of a place to find the warm mod?
i believe doug is the only one who does that
Doug is ... one of the Oade Bros?
Yes. Doug = Oade. Sell your stock unit & buy a stock (or digi-modded) unit from him. Once you've bought one from them you can get it modded at a later date.
the w and p mods involve replacing of the op-amps, not something many would risk doing. ANd I'm sure there is more to it than that
i say digi-mod this one yourself, use it for a bit, then when you are ready to pay for the warm mod you can just buy a warm modded unit from oade and sell yours for what you paid for it - if not a few dollars more - here or on the oade board.
i'd gladly pay an extra $20- 30 to get a digi-modded ua-5.
Sounds good ... I think I'll go with Mike's advice. The digi-mod looks easy to me.
How huge a sonic difference do the warm and presence mods make?

not sure on the p mode but there are alot of tapes with the w-mod circulating on BT's right now...check 'em out.
The difference is HUGE!!! The stock pre's are noisy and generally pretty el crappy from my use!

Okay. Thanks, everybody-- got the answers I was looking for.
I think Doug will still mod them he just won't offer any kind of waranty.
That's news to me. Last I talked to him he told me no way Jose.
I talked to him Tuesday ... or whoever the authoritative guy answering the phone was ... and I didn't hear a hint of a possibility in his voice when he told me they only modify units they sell.
