Title: Iriver H120 Drop-outs
Post by: lilricky on July 07, 2008, 11:10:01 PM
I'm using a Rockboxed h120 to record wave files from a dvd source that I recorded. I'm using the analog input with the latest build of RB. I'm getting periodic drop outs the last exactly 3 seconds.
Anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this? And remedies?
Thanks

I'll start with the generic stuff:

1) Do you have anything on the drive currently or is it "empty"?
2) How long between dropouts.
3) If you open the waves in an editor, are they "about" the same length, or *are* they the same length?
4) How long have you had the device? (done any scandisc or other analysis on how good the drive is?)

I've never had that problem with mine, so I'm just mentally going through the first things I'd look at.

Thanks,
1: I do have a couple of folders w/mp3's in them.
2: Varies
3: When I open the files in cool edit pro they are exactly 3sec long;
4: I was going to try to defrag the drive next.

Look at the bright side, it's messing up in a non-live environment.  ;D

I'd also be interested in what a scandisk report comes back as (preferably before defrag, but yeah).

exactly 3 seconds is really weird...

is this with a recent rockbox version?
does it give any warning?

Can you clarify again what your source is???
You're spinning a DVD disc containing video + audio that you taped with a DV-cam?
On your PC or a standalone player?

Why not just rip the DVD disc and extract the audio, without involving the H120?!? Or am I missing something here?

Maybe I'm missing something here. Is it possible to rip a DVD>wav? What program would I use for that. I'm spinning a DVD containing audio/video that I'm trying to extract the audio. I'm using the audio outs of a stand alone DVD player.

Sure, folks have been doing it for a few years now...
Earlier on, DVD-Decrypter was the name of the game, and it's still useable:

These days, the guys over at cdfreaks.com seem to hail DVDFab as the cutting edge tool. I've yet to try it out though:

So a few questions,
1. The drop outs, are they 3 seconds of silence recorded or is it 3 seconds not recorded but no "gap" in what is recorded?

2. Are you getting any text displayed on the iriver screen during reording not usually there?

3. What version of rockbox are you using? (System properties)

Thanks,
Joe

1: Actually when I time them in CEP they time out at 2 sec.(I guess I count 1/1000 to fast). In fact a random sampling would be 01.905, 02.00  01.907 etc. Dead silence
2: I don't watch the iriver screen thru the whole process.
3: r17939-080704. That was the latest build I could find.
exactly 3 seconds is really weird...

does it give any warning?

No Warning. I just see them when I scan thru the .wav in CEP.

Hmmm... if rockbox had a hiccup it would
1) print a warning about it that stays on until recording ends
2) just miss samples, not insert silence

You're sure this wasn't in the source?
Is it reproducible?

That was my next question. What happens if you change sources, say a regular CD player with headphone out (some other physical player). I'm fishing, but it would help isolate equipment.

When I have chance I will try to record the same DVD twice. And I'll check to see if it's the source. I don't necessarily think it's a RB problem. I just don't have the time to experiment with it this week.
