Title: Recording Rookie seeks advice!!
Post by: bobsaver500 on July 09, 2008, 11:58:29 AM
Hi folks, having little or no knowledge about live recording I've stumbled upon this forum, hopefully it'll help us record our gigs a lot better with some of your help.
We're a working 4 piece band (myspace.com/my4play) playing all over Europe year round, we do about 250 gigs a year. Recently we bought a Boss micro BR, which has been really good for us to get a rough idea of our sound. We are just hardwire recording from the CFX 20 Mackie desk from two of our aux outs, at the moment. Now we are looking to buy a condenser mic or 2 to go in front of our srm-450 Mackie speakers to capture some more ambience and crowd noise to work with our hardwire setup. Thats my 1st question, which type of mic/s should I buy???
Cheers

How much can you afford to spend?

your basic is gonna be mics>preamp>bit bucket

If you are on a budget, I highly recommend the Avantones CK-1's mics.

If all you want is ambience, you don't need condensers.  Just stick a couple of SM57's out there and point them at the crowd.

Thanks guys for your help. We have a month off now before we're touring again, it'll give me time to check out the mics suggested. Cheers!!
