sup fellas
ive got a marshall vs65r guitar amp...valvestate circuitry(half solid state half tube) 65w, reverb(sucks)...i bought it used last year, and it works alright
one thing about it though - when its on the overdrive channel, the sound sort of fluctuates. its like ive got a phase going, but a really crappy phase...and its only on the overdrive, so i know its not the speaker or guitar.
any ideas on what it might be?

i'm not a huge fan of marshal, i have a '67 ampeg tube amp, but i'd recomend not using the overdrive if you don't like it, go buy another overdrive pedal. there is a cool fuzz box i've been meaning to get, i can't remember the name, my buddy at the guitar shop here was trying to get me to buy it, but its a russian built one. but the all around effects king is boss. they make everything, and they are good. unless u want stereo effects, then you might have to look elsewhere, but most amps are mono anyway, for stereo effects get a digitech processor. I love mine, its got like 200 presets, and you can customize them for your own taste. Also the Line 6 stomp boxes i think are sick. i have the DL-4 delay modular and loop sampler, but the others are badass as well here is the one for distortions and stuff. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031211164107012217211129939360/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/150384/

dump the mashall, dunp the fender, dump the ampeg and buy
MESA BOOGIE
if you want mesa in a portable package, i fully recommend the v-twin pedal for about $200
i use the vtwin in front of my fender blues deville 212 (not the hot rod) and it gives me all i need
as for your marshall channel issue, did you buy it new, or used? sounds to me like the tubes may 1)need replacing, or if recently replaced then 2)may need biasing...but with a hybrid, i am not sure how easy that would be...

yea not a fan of mesa boogie amps. but i will give that they are powerfull as hell, and loud. or the ones i've played on were. i like the tone i get from my amp. and i'm still tweaking it, been playing on it for over a year, and i never messed with EQ to make it sound how i want, and what order my effects go also has made a difference. i think mesa boogies are great, but they seem like they are for a harder style players amp than what i play. oh well..

I seem to remember something about this from my nephew. It's probably stems from either the reverb or the 'contour' control. Maybe try turning the reverb all the way down and see what you get; and then try the same with the contour.
BTW, I like the Tech21 Trademark 60 for plinking & practicing. I use a Top Hat if I actually have to get loud.

ok - mexi - you thinking of the big muff pi? thats russian made. ive been wanting to get a distortion/overdrive pedal, but never really get to it. once i get the phase modulator i fell in love with, ill go for o/d
chris k - i have not even close to enough money for the cheapest mesa boogie amp ever
manny - ive looked at that already, turning everything from the goin - bass - contour - treble - volume - reverb and the volume and tone on my guitar, all up and down and in all different combinations and everything...it fades a lot when youre up with the bass and down with the treble, but you can still hear it. the higher notes on the fretboard are the ones that seem to be affected the most by it

oh yeah - i bought it used and i think its been like this the whole time ive had it
where can i see (if theres some kind of indication) that the tube needs to be replaced? and whats biasing?

not sure about the tubed. i never messed with mine, all i know is i need new ones. the preamp tubes, and 2 power tubes are original in mine and one burnt out, but if there is an old radio shop around you they normally have tube testors. not many guitar stores do anymore, unless they are good ones. and yes that big muff pie is the pedal, nice work +T. haha good luck, also consider cleaning your potentiometers on the amp, and while your at it, on your guitar. i've had some get dirty on my PA, when i moved them, they wouldn't do anything, and werent working unless i really messed with them, but clean them that might help, and its good for them anyway. good luck peace.

yeah dude... the v-twin is awesome... I dig mine. This thing sounds great on clean or distortion.

how would one go about cleaning them? just with compressed air or endust? cause in my guitar, theyve got little metal covers over the stuff - do i take those off?
