Title: Good wireless PC music system
Post by: ts on July 30, 2008, 10:43:34 AM
Creative has a system.

Any others I should look at? Squeezebox? I know nothing about this stuff. My stereo is about 25 feet from a PC, wireless router is another 25-30 feet away.

thanks, ts

edit to add: sorry didn't read deep enough into this forum. looks like sd duet maybe is the way to go. carry on.

if the PC/router is only 25' away it may be more feasible to look into one of the wired squeezebox options

long fiber optical cable?
I use a 12 foot one going from my PC soundcard to my Home Theater system.

Above are all good options and if I were a little smarter it would have been very easy to do as the room was just built >:D Now I really don't want to lay a cable across the carpet  I guess I could run it around the base molding. It would be at least a 30 foot run.

The sound card may not work either as the pc is a Dell all-in-one deal. I don't know how a sound card would fit. So a hard wired squeeze box with a long opti cable might work :hmmm:

The Squeezebox uses ethernet for its wired connection. So, either run an ethernet cable from the router to the Squeezebox or use wireless and call it a day.

I love my Squeezebox, so I'd recommend that.

If you want to go wired though, sending a digital signal and then using a DAC should work good too.  I don't remember the details on cable lengths, but somehow I thought that coax cable was better for long runs than optical (I well could have that backwards though).

Assuming coax works, you should look at Canare's micro-coax cable:  L-1.5C2VS.  It is smaller in diameter than the Belden 1804a silver cable stock people use for mic cables (that is, really small, on the order of mic active cable diameter).  You should be able to make a coax cable using this stock and then pull up the carpet bit by bit and run the cable under the carpet between the carpet tack strip and the wall.

I use one of these sitting on top of my entertainment stand with a wireless card in it.
