Title: Busman BSCS-L pics & samples (gear pr0n)
Post by: page on August 03, 2008, 11:59:54 PM
Info on this around here is rather thin, so after I procured one, I thought I'd try and fill in some gaps.

-- (see http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,96832.msg1438557.html#msg1438557 for samples) If the samples don't work, contact me and I'll mess with it.

-- Field pics: http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,112434.0.html

Included here are the pictures since I didn't want to hose the team thread with a ton of pics.

The first picture is a reference point. I included the Euro for our overseas friends to compare to the quarter. Being from the South, I've included the third object as it is considered a reference point in some parts, so convert to/from what makes you happy.  :P  I only lightened/darkened 3 pictures, and all but 2 where reduced to a longest side of 640px. I teh suck at photos, sorry.

Included in the kit was the following:

1 - Busman BSCS-L mic (5pin)
1 - Power cable (3 prong)
1 - mic power box (220/110 selectable, 5 pin in, 2x 3pin out)
1 - long 5pin > 5pin cable
1 - shock mount (5/8th in thread)
1 - windscreen
extra:
1 - 15ft 5pin > 2x 3pin XLR cable (w/ techflex)

Notes:
- Total cost after standard shipping and custom cable was just shy of $700. (mid-july of '08, contact him for more accurate cost)
- This thing is hefty, I'm not sure how much the LSD2 weighs, but I'm not sure I'd trust this using a clamp other then an avenger/bogen superclamp. I may be paranoid, ymmv.
- On mine, the top capsule is the left channel, and looking at it from the top reference divot (facing you), the left side of the diaphragm is the positive/front lobe based on my rudimentary tests (unfortunately done after the samples above were done, but I think they are correct). The bottom channel's front/positive lobe is on the side with the BUSMAN engraving. Also, there are two sets of switches for each channel, pattern and rolloff. When looking at the engraving, the front set of switches are for the bottom, and the back set of switches are for the top.
- I'll probably tear out the foam insert, or at least cut it up a bit (the case seems pretty good to me). I can't get the UA-5 in there, and I'm not going to carry around the power supply nor the extra 5pin>5pin cable.
- The mic is just shy of 6.25" in circumference, and has a diameter of just shy of 2 inches (in case you are mixing/matching gear/shockmount with other stuff)

edit (11/07): added measurements of mic (5th bullet point), LMA link, and field pic thread.

I don't know why it says Tube Mic on the box, maybe it's the same power supply that is used on his tube stuff. I haven't tested this.
Also, look on the top down view of the windscreen with the quarter on it. There is a little red line that shows where the windscreen ends since it's kinda tough to tell.

These generally pertain to the mic and mount. The shockmount has an "old ski boot buckle" style clip (far rod on the hook, pull middle rod back over and reverse it to clamp). I'll get a better picture of the shockmount when it's empty if someone wants one, it has about strips of felt lining it to prevent the mount from scraping at the yellow/orange paint.

Would love to hear how it sounds.  On a different note, it was good to see the Richbrau cap in the 1st photo.....some of the best beer in Richmond.

Their summer wheaty whips the llamas ass, wish they would bottle it. ;D

Did the sendspace stuff in the busman thread no longer work? If they are down, then curses. I'm going to put up my Pumpkins show this evening which I did with the FR2-LE, and I seeded Mike Gordon over at bt.etree and my Bridge tape from earlier in the month is up on LMA (can't remember the address).

Forgive me for being a dumbass, but can the mic take phantom (so you don't have to use the power supply) or do you always have to use the supplied power supply?

No worries, better to ask then be ignorant. It takes phantom power fine, I however don't know if there is some magic cable voodoo that was done and would have to be repeated if someone were going to try and construct their own cable instead of getting one from busman.

Also, I'm not sure if the delivered supply is better/cleaner at powering the mic or not.

Maybe Busman can chime in. Specifically, can I power this mic straight from an R44?

I just pulled the stats for the R44 and compared them to my FR2LE, and both are putting out the standard -+4v P48 with 8ma (not the written standard of 10ma). If you can put phantom to two separate channels and use the 5pin -> 2x XLR cable that he offers, I wouldn't see why it would be a problem. I just don't know how the cable he makes handles 2 separate P48 signals. It does, I just don't know the details.

Paging busman... cleanup on isle 3
