I wanted a way to attach my portable recorder to the stand my mic is on top of (I use a photo light stand because I have a lot of photo gear). So I made this clamp out of PVC pipe components. It's open on the side, so I can attach it further down when I have the stand extended and the mic high.
The PVC "T" fitting is 1" main with a 3/4" aem, the elbow and end cap are 3/4" The pieces are glued together with PVC cement. The head of the 1/4" mouting bolt is hot glued in place on the inside of the end cap, the washer outside is a faucet washer. The faucet washer has enough compression to let you screw the recorder on securely, but have the display in good alignment for viewing.
You will need a 3/16" drill and 1/4-20 tap to make the hole and cut the threads for the thumbscrew.
One thing to be aware of with PVC pipe cement is that it sets virtually immediately, so when you assemble, you apply the cement to the inside of the fitting, then slide the pipe piece into the fitting quicky, smoothly, and firmly. Make sure your alignment is right on the elbow before you slide it on, because the cement sets so quickly, you won't have time to twist to tweak the alignment.
Depending on where the tripod mount is on your recorder, you might want to omit the elbow, or substitute a 90 degree elbow (e.g. for a Zoom H2 that has the tripod mount on the bottom). You also could add a micro-ballhead that would let you adust all sorts of ways.

Brilliant idea and very nicely done!
Thanx for sharing. +T

Very neat! Something that will be in the shops one day perhaps, for those not so clever with their hands like you clearly are!

Excellent! +T

I've been trying to cook up something like this for my R-09 w/out having to buy the leather pouch that Edirol sells.
I need to check out the vent-mount phone holders at Wal-Mart on my way home.

Very nice ;D

+T for originality. For my H2 I took a standard mic attachment arm (see pic) and drilled 1/4" holes where needed. I use a 1/4X20 wing bolt and some washers to mount the H2 and a short bungie cord to mount my CA-9000 preamp. All of it nice a neat off the ground.

Excellent idea.
I bought one of these recently for a GPS, didn't think about modding it for my R09HR

I need two ... One for the R-09, one for the Church Audio preamp.

That's brilliant! +T
Now I just need to drill a hole in the back of the R-09 :D
