I've haven't taped in 7 years (formerly using a D8) but now would like to get back in the game. I just moved to Plattsburgh, NY and the abundance of great live music in Burlington is why I'm deciding to get back into taping. After lurking around this forum for the last few months decided to make the plunge and buy a R-09HR. Now I would like to buy a set of mics. The AT2021 seem a good deal for a matched pair (Sound Professionals). I would be doing open taping exclusively. Any thoughts? If they aren't that great I'll just wait and buy the Busman BSC1 since they seem to get great reviews and I like the sound from the shows I've heard from them. Also on that note anyone have samples of anything with either the R-09HR and AT2021 or R-09HR and Busman BSC1, I couldn't find anything with the search. Thanks.

See Team Busman:

That'd be my recommendation.

Given the Busmans are $500 a pair? Then you have a lot of options open to you, don't forget to audition the AT3031's (still available at $169 each $338 pair, you would need a Phantom power supply $50 and cable $15 = $~400) this would work well with the R09HR.

I use the AT3032's for quietude field recording and have nothing but praise for the AT30XX series.

I was looking at the AT2021's today (as I was pondering snapping up some of the remaining AT30XX stock :)) I'd be interested to hear the AT2021's too.
EDIT: Actually, found some...
Click here to see a list of 2021 band recordings at www.archive.org (http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=AT2021)
The first result I clicked on for the 2021's sound nice here (AT2021 -> Denecke PS-2 -> Edirol R-09)...

works, lots of examples :)
BTW: On the other hand, this is $20 worth of mics (WM61-A) + the predecessor to your recorder...

Here's how to make your own...and I would encourage you to do it, always good to have a pair of disposable but good mics :)

One thing the recordings at www.archive.org should remind us all is that mic-placement and venue is critical. There are nice and ordinary examples from all the mics I have linked to.

Thanks digifish! I would +T you but can't yet >:(. After listening to all the samples you provided I did decide to go with the AT3031, to me at least they sounded crisper with the R-09 than some other mics I have heard with the R-09 ( I took your idea to search archive, I get good tunes there all the time but didn't think to search them for samples, sometimes the answers are right in front of you and you don't even know it). So I assume they will sound as great with the HR. Thanks again!

I am glad you found it useful. The AT30XX series have no obvious flaws, very low self-noise (lower than the quoted spec it seems) and good enough that AT just tweaked the internal circuity, painted them black and re-released them as the 40XX series for another $290 :o
The nice thing about the archive, for me, is the huge within-mic variability. This emphasizes the impact of many factors beyond your control can have on the recording.

The busman mics caught my eye and they are on my list, right after rode mics, AT3031, etc. but until then, I may get these:
http://www.superlux.us/smalldiaphragm.html
Check out SMK-H8K Matched Stereo Pair of CM-H8K/U cardioid microphones on that page. There are many people around here who likes these. Search the archive section as well. BTW, a PAIR is only $125... happy searching.
peace,

What is the phantom power/preamp box in that picture?

It's an 'ART Phantom II' :)
~ $49 (just supplies phantom power, was purchased to make some comparisons of the MixPre vs Internal micpres on the R09HR).
