I assume that the RED dot is the positive lobe, so I should be aiming it to the Left, and also running the MK8 into the Right Channel (Left = Mid, Right = Side). Am I correct?

I think sub-card is a good choice for Mid when running on-stage.
Actually, I think RJT has it backwards.
Mid = Left
Right = Side, with the positive lobe (the "front" of the 414s) of the figure-8 pointing left
I think most M-S decoders assume the above. So if you use a different setup, you'll either want to decode manually, or adjust in post for the decoder to work properly. The good news is even if you screw up the channel assignments or +/- lobe directions (as I've done a few times), you can fix it in post.
I happen to prefer L for M and R for S. "Left/right" and "mid/side" are the order in which I normally say those two pairs of things; I find that the association makes more sense that way.
But whichever way you do it isn't actually important to the result, as long as you write down what you did--and keep what you wrote (and read it, and check your wiring when you hook up the matrix for playback).
I aim the 0-degree axis of the figure-8 microphone to the left. That actually matters. M/S matrixes are always designed to follow L = M + S and R = M - S, so if S is inverted, you end up with the L and R channels reversed.
Good luck! Be sure to let us all know how it goes.

also from everything I have seen the Red dot does go to the left side on the mk8

Hope this helps out...... You shoud def. try the 21/8 M/S! That combo is :smoking2: :veryevil:

thanks. tonight I am running 4 channel, so:
1&2: Midside mk5 (card) + mk8
and
3&4: mk21 NOS
or
1&2: Midside mk21 + mk8
and
3&4: mk5 (omni)

ooohhhh...... tough choice..... both are going to sound sweet I bet though. Option #2 is leaning toward my kinda flavor.
Who are you taping tonight?

Schoeps says red is the left channel. You can always flip it in post, too.
M-S; L-R
You have it right. Happy taping.

good enough for good times: robert mercurio, jeff raines, simon lott, and joe ashlar
It ran onstage directly in front of the drums. the stage is really shallow so that was my only option. I went with
1&2: Midside mk5 (card) + mk8
and
3&4: mk21 NOS
b/c the crowd is loud/rowdy and right up on the musicians. so I figured I would get too much crowd noise with the omnis. transferring now. I will try the other setup with the 21 as the mid. Ts all around.

tracking it out now. probably up it later tonight. the only thing that I didn't like is that the stage is so small and the snare drum would sizzle when it was quiet and the bassline was kicking. other than that, it sounds terrific.

Just to confirm after the fact: When positive-going sound pressure strikes the diaphragm on its 0-degree axis, a microphone is supposed to put out a positive-going voltage.
A bidirectional capsule has two equal and opposite axes--one at 0 degrees and one at 180. The red dot on a Schoeps MK 6 or MK 8 capsule marks the 0-degree axis. The 180-degree axis has identical sensitivity and frequency response, but its polarity is inverted. Thus if you set up your M/S matrixing arrangement as L = M + S and R = M - S as most people prefer to do, the red dot should face to the left. Otherwise you'll get channel reversal in your stereo playback.
