Has anyone used the Sony ECM-DS70P with the Edirol r09?
Is this an improvement over the built in mics for live music?
-
or perhaps the soundprofessional t -mic is a better option?

I know the cheap Sony mics are not very good (bass deficient, for one thing). I started with a Sony 907 and was amazed at the improvement when I switched to SP 853 mics.
SP's occasionally offers this T mic for 2 for the price of 1, so how good could they be for critical applications?
You need to spend a little more for good performance, even though admittedly a T mic is convenient. I would suggest going with Church Audio cards or omni's (or both) to get the best bang for the buck without spending a lot.

QTF. OFT (slip of the tongue!) :P
Your R09-HR has the capability of capturing so much better sound quality than that, so it would be a waste of money to run it with a cheap T-mic in front.
As a rule of thumb, you will get the best sound for your bucks if you budget at least 50% of your cash for the mic+pre stage, and the rest of the money on the recorder.
So if you spent $300 on the R09HR, dropping $289 on the Church combo is money well spent. With the added advantage of cabled mics that you can stand- or body mount!

QFT--that said, I find that 90% of the time, any external mic will sound better than the built-in mics.

I think even a Rode NT4 would be a huge improvement over the Sony mic. No need for a battery box as it can be self powered by an internal 9v battery and can fit on any mic stand. Capsules are in XY so you're limited as far as mic configurations go. I've used it on several occasions to record a choir and it sounds pretty decent. Kinda lacking in the detail required for a 100 voice SATB choral group with a piano accompaniment but nothing you can't fix with a little EQ.
