I got pwnt for 1 set last night for waybacks, with an non adjustable stereo out, lucky for set 2 I got mono out that could be turned down. I used / will use in the future a iriver for SBD patching.

What sort of gain did you have to run the iRiver at to get good levels?

Another option that will work in a pinch is a volume control / extender cable for headphones. Sound Professionals also offers an attenuator that I believe is the same thing. That way you can dial in the exact attenuation you need. It's not the highest-fi solution, but it worked ok here IMO:

If you run the line in to the back of your UA-5, I expect that can take a hot signal, and use the UA-5 A/D.

yeah in hindsight, I should have tried the UA-5. The mono board feed for set II does sound really good, may have to try a set II matrix

For waht it's worth, you and I run nearly the same gear - Nak 300 (tascam for me) to UA-5 to 120 and I use h320 for SDB feed. I need to be able to fix sync in post so it's 4 track to 2 track matrix in post.

the sp one is only 6db seems like that wouldn't be enough in many cases ???
the microtrack one is 10

Radio Shack has the same thing locally if you have one close... But I still am curious what gain structure you had to run on your iriver to get decent levels.
$7 retail for a carbon track resistor and cabeling and jacks isn't really gonna buy much fidelity, and those things go bad pretty quickly...

It was -3 or -4 for the mono that worked. It went down -10ish for the set I issues

How was the -10dB? I have run close to that with good luck... The iRiver is supposed to have analog into the opamp and gain structure and then internal 20bit precision till it is output from that section to the A.D stage. This is according to the Rockbox guys...

Analog is only in 3dB steps from 0 to +24 dB. Anything above that (and any smaller step) is digital, and more importantly any attenuation below 0 dB is digital. So if you need negative gain to keep the signal below full scale, you will be recording a clipped signal, albeit one that is flattened off below full scale. (Some people report that -3dB recordings don't sound clipped...I think this has more to do with the DACs used on playback doing better playing a slightly clipped square wave that is at -3dB vs. a slightly clipped square wave at full scale.)

the set 2 mono sounded good on the headphones after the show for like 15 seconds, but this tells the story. It does not sound nasty, but its not usable for a matrix.

I agree w/ this and even made my self a aptch cable w/ -25dB built in because my -20dB still was cutting it close.

The caption on the SP photo is a bit misleading. What it really means is that at the least (highest volume setting), the SP cable will attenuate by 6 dB. Turning down the volume knob on the cable will attenuate even more than that.

Radio shack only had -60 cables will order that thing from SP
Just got back from outdoor the brew set. -4 and its seems usable SBD > 120
