Just got a wmod ua5. i can plug it in at most of the shows i tape (my own band), but ones where i can't is this the right battery i want? how does this work, just plug the ua5 into this?

There's a thread in the Archival Info forum about building DIY RC/SLA battery packs. All the info you need should be there. And yeah, that's the same RC battery a lot of people are using.

There was also a link, maybe the same as Brian's, that I used a while back. Builing your own battery packs for the UA5. I use the 9.6 volts for RC cars.

Yup. Thats exactly what I use.

I got all this stuff from Radio Shack:
8x AA holder (1.2vx8=9.6v)
2x 9v battery plugs
1 UA5-type plug and adapter wire
Soldered all together, I added a second 9v plug and a 6 AA holder for alkaline batteries (1.5sx6=9.0v) in case of emergency where I can't recharge...
Thanks to Dail Reed for the original stuff, I've since resoldered and replaced most of the parts...

Yeah. The 9.6v RC packs make for a simple setup.
