Hi I was wondering why people use the 442 with the 744 if they only need only 2 external preamp for channel 3 and 4. Would it be more economical if they use a 2 channel preamp (like the mixpre) with the 744 instead?
Or does the 442 preamp sounds better than the 744's internal preamp for channel 1 and 2?
Just wondering why people are not running MixPre or V3 or any other 2 channel preamp with the 744t instead.

While there may be a couple that are, I don't know any concert tapers that use the 442 mated with a 744T, but I understand it's a quite common combo in ENG and film/video sound capture use.

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering why people use the 442 with the 744t if they only need a 2 channel preamp for channel 3 and 4. Maybe they are doing 6 channel recording? But for 4 channel recording it seems more logical to use a cheaper 2 channel preamp/mixer like the V3 or MixPre with the 744t. Unless the preamp in the 442 is an upgrade from the one ones in 744t. Hope someone here who use this combo can put some light in my confusion.

The 442 is a MIXER first and foremost which contains badass transformer pre-amps.
