Title: Replace cord on Sony MDR-7506 cans?
Post by: nolonemo on October 13, 2008, 02:53:44 PM
I hate the coiled cord on these things.  Is it easy to open up the earpiece to replace it with a straight cord?  Is the attachment soldered or mechanical?  Anyone know of a source for a straight cord terminating in a 1/8" stereo mini-plug? - I'd like to get something premade rather than make up my own.

If this is the case where the solution has to be cutting the cord and attaching a straight cord externally, what gauge wire does the cord use - is it large enough to be able to work with easily (i.e., 24 ga. or larger?).

Thanks.

Your best bet is to ask at head-fi:  www.head-fi.org

I did hear from one of the regulars on the Sony Vegas forum that the cord uses the "tinsel" wire - lots of very thin strands individually laquered with cloth threads in the wind.  That stuff is a real b**ch to work with, though I have done it before.  So cutting the cord is definitely not an option....

I would just leave it then...

For what its worth, I've had my 7506's for 7+ years and have had not a single problem with them.  If anything, I highly recommend the Beyerdynamic DT-250 velour pads to replace those annoying pleather pads.  The extra comfort will bring a  :D to your face.   ;D
