Hey now,
looking for a preamp to run in front of a Fostex FR-LE2. Anyone ever go analogue out of a UA5 into a le2? It seems as though the UA5 is intended to dump digitally to a deck/comp, but it does have the 1/4" outs, right?
thanks,

You might want to wait and check out the test ts members Notosfast and WillS are doing at the Waybacks today. They are running a non mod and a busman mod FR-LE2 for a set each running the same pair of mics so they are going to switch decks during set break and we can hear both decks w/ two sets of mics. Should be interesting but for my $$ and listening to notsofast recordings before and after mod I think the busman mod was worth every penny but don't ake my word go over to LMA and check it out for your self ;)

analogue out of the ua-5 will introduce another step in conversion of the signal. a>d>a... there is NO passthrough on the ua-5.

If you ask me (which no one did) i think the stock fr2le has a better preamp than a stock UA-5

I was going to say the same thing but I only have had a UA5 and never owned a fr2le ;)

The FR-2LE sounds pretty good on it's own.
The UA-5 is not an improvement, even if you found a way to make it work.
A Modded FR-2LE is a beautiful thing, no other pre is really needed.

I agree, you probably wouldn't want to add that extra conversion. Typically a ua-5 digimod would only improve the sound, even with the a>d>a conversion, on some of the smaller hand held recorders (R-09, H120, DR-1, etc.) that don't have the greatest pre-amps.

busman also told me he feels the fr2le mod is a better sounding mod then the ua5
i still have mine stock and like it so if the mod is an improvement then once i get the money it will be a niccccce upgrade

Well, we found out during soundcheck there would only be one set, so we did the best comparison we could swapping mid-song a few times then:

I thought the FR2-LE had enough amplification built-in not to require any preamp in the first place.
Your assumption is that the UA-5 amp stage is significantly better than the FR2-LE amp stage?! I'd doubt that you'd get any noticable improvement... Depends on which (if any) mod either of the units have.
