Title: I need an amp (?receiver?)
Post by: Ryan Sims on October 24, 2008, 09:15:33 AM
Hello good folks.

I bought a set of monitors, thinking they were active, finding that they're passive upon delivery.

I also don't know very much about these things (playback in general), but have been looking around. So here are some questions.

The monitors (Alesis Monitor One MKII) are rated at 4 ohms. This means the amp must be at least 4 ohms, right?

Second, would a receiver adequately power these? I could use a receiver as it is.

Last, my budget is slim, so recommendations on spots to pick up anything used, and any particular ideas are much appreciated.

Thanks, everyone.

As far as used goes, go thrifting! So many people have ditched their audio gear for computer only music playback that Goodwill etc are generally swamped with quality amps. I love late '70's solid state stuff, but I see plenty of more modern amps as well. If you know someone who reconditions old gear, thrifting can save you alot of money.

Lots of stuff on my local CraigsList (Raleigh, NC).  I see stuff on there all the time and you can go to someone's house and listen to it before you buy...  I bought my Mirage subwoofer several years ago like this...
