They have launched a new furry thing WS6 (http://www.rodemic.com/accessory.php?product=WS6) ~USD $60 (if you shop around) suitable for the RĂ˜DE NTG-1 and NTG-2, as well as any shotgun microphone with a maximum slot length of 160.5mm (6 1/4") and a diameter of 21-22.5mm. 'Follows' the design principles of the Rycote Softie (http://www.rycote.com/products/softie_system/softie_windshield/).

nice find...again!!
Where did you find one in the price range?

while we're on the same topic, how do you think the video mic rates to the ntg1? Looks like the specs are slightly different, naturally, but there is also $100 difference.

Any ideas??

Just googling Rode WS6 sales. This one on e-Bay (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-RODE-WS6-WINDSHIELD_W0QQitemZ110297221730QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116) is $50 USD.

I would expect the NTG-1 to sound better if you pair it with a good mic preamp. I don't have any comparisons tho. The NTG-1 does have lower noise specs.
Rode Video Mic = 74 dB SPL (A - weighted per IEC651)
NTG-1 = 76 dB SPL (A - weighted per IEC651)

From the manual, just seems a strange couple of sentences to write :)

...what is more creepy is that it does indeed look like fur from a dead-wombat

PS: Rode are calling the cover a 'dead wombat' if it was not clear.
