You know, something like what owners on the iRiver H1x0/3x0 have done? example (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,95239.0.html)
I'm looking to lesson the "heat" my JB3 emits (which is coming from the hard drive) and try to lighten the overall weight of this just a bit.
With the cost of CF cards these days example (http://dealmac.com/Lexar-8-GB-Pr-133-x-Compact-Flash-Card-for-10-after-rebate-free-shipping-updated-/261657.html?redir=1&ref=alert_bottom_1), I'm surprised to not see any mention of people doing this (or if it's been mentioned, somewhere, I haven't stumbled on it yet and please alert me to the respective thread).

I swear I thought I've seen it somewhere where someone made this conversion on a JB3......can't seem to find it though.

sounds like a lot of work for very little benefit. It won't be THAT much cooler, and you will only shave a handful of grams. At the end of the day it's still a JB3!

actually, I don't think it'd be much work at all.
As far as heat is concerned, not sure if it's just my JB3, but my JB3 runs really warm! Swap that HD with non-moving part should cut the heat down drastically (on paper this would appear to be the case).
As far as a "benefits" of doing this mod, well in the end you have a solid state recorder if that's of any interest (right now the JB3 is not solid state), a device generating less heat, and a recorder that should weigh a bit less (figuratively speaking). Last time I checked but CF cards weigh at most about 1/10" the weight of a laptop hard drive.
But then that's coming from someone who's JB3 has shut completely off (one time too many, and mid show mind you) from too much heat......
For discussion's sake, if this were of no benefit, then why would others do it to a different recording device(s)?

It is pretty easy to change the HDD in the JB3. You just have to be very careful when unscrewing the 2 screws close to the LCD display so as not to crack or break the LCD display.
I would also think this would increase battery life as well.

I guess you're right. I have a bad habit of cost analyzing things. Being self employed will do that to ya. For MY time it does not seem worth it considering that it is a relatively inexpensive device. My time is worth more. I guess I am saying that an Iriver is not that expensive. So when you add up the JB3, the new drive, the supplies, and the time, it will cost MORE than the right unit would have in the first place. I would just go buy an Iriver. But like you say, for the sake of argument, people do it so we know it is possible. Good luck with it.

You can pick up a 16GB A-Data CF for about $30 at NewEgg
