Title: Have show & lineage, want to know the taper (AKG 480/ck63)
Post by: ClancyWiggum on November 20, 2008, 01:10:44 PM
Hey all,

first off, I hope I post my question in the right forum (the term "newbie friendly" encouraged me to post it here). If I'm wrong here, my apologies.

So I have a DAT of

- Phish 11-29-1998 Worcester
- Lineage: AKG 480/ck63 > Aerco > SBM1 > D8
- received in trade with Tim Danielson some years ago

Tim Danielson always is listed with AKG 480/ck61 on archive.org, so I doubt that he taped it. I tried to contact him, but the email addys I found probably are outdated. Is he a member of this sandbox? Anyone know who run that rig at the mentioned show? Background simply is that I'm transferring it and want to give credit if somehow possible.

Thanks for any help!

Friedemann (CW)

Check his other shows on Archive and see if they list the Aerco/SBM1 combo. If so, it's probably his tape. The difference between the ck61 and ck63 are interchangeable capsules for the same microphone body.

Here are two shows in the same time frame that show 483s.  However, it also shows the V2 rather than an Aerco.  I wonder if Tim used his own mics, but someone else's rig???  Team effort???  Or maybe he just patched???

Interesting...

Good idea, thanks! Done, and nope, all other shows taped by him list >Lunatec V2->GP ADC-20->DA-P1 (earliest being from 10/98). That's also what he lists as his rig on his ages-old tapelist.

Yup, he probably patched... I guess the best would be if I could contact him. Thanks so far, doods!

How does it sound? The difference between the 63 hypers and 61 cards is pretty distinct.

I like the sound very much, though it's not as great as the circulating recordings from the same venue one year before (Phish 11-29-1997 recorded by Gary Fox f.e. sounds better, clearer.

However, I've compared it to the circulating Schoeps m222/mk41 > N222 Preamp > HHB, and to my ears in the AKG source there are more trebles and the vocals of the musicians are a little more present (I hope this answers your question - sorry, my speaking about sound differences is limited because english isn't my mothers language).

Friedemann, have you checked with Jason Sobel?  He seems to have his finger on the pulse of Phish sources.

I've told him about the source, but haven't asked him the question who could be the taper yet. I'll try that, too.  8)

Does the amount of bass seem to be about the same as or less thanthe 41/NT222>HHb recording? If so I would guess that it is the 63 caps. If there is more low end I would think it is the 61's. Just a guess though!!

Take care,
Ben

Personal opinion is not to go with the sound as the basis for determing if it was a 61 or a 63.  The 63s in this series provide PLENTY of bass...much more than a typical hyper.  In fact, this is what is so great about the AKG CK63 capsule and the reason it's considered one of the best hypers going.

The shed or location of the mics could just as easily cause a recording to go high end.

Additionally, it's well known that a Grace preamp provides a slightly 'less warm' preamp sound to many recordings as compared to other preamps.

The point is, there's plenty of variables that contribute to the final sound...and 61s and 63s sound close enough together that I don't think you can say just by listening which it is.
