Title: lsd2 > Rolls PB224 > IHP120.... will this work?
Post by: asobriquet on November 21, 2008, 02:25:21 AM
So, I'm getting and LSD2 and I want to run it into my IHP120 using my Rolls PB224 as the phantom power source (this will be just a temporary arrangement to hold me until I can afford a UA-5).  What I'm wondering is if this set-up will work at loud shows where gain won't be needed?  Also, is there any risk of damaging my iriver if I do this?

Thanks in advance.

I don't like the iriver over +20 and I think you will need more gain.

I agree.  I think you will need about 30db of gain, so if you set the H120 to +20, and then bring the rest up in post, I expect the background hiss will start to be noticible... but you won't know until you try it.

Thanks for the input, Run... and Smokin'....  Yeah, I suppose that I'll just have to try it out and see what happens.  I just wanted to see if I was missing something crucial in this arrangement that might actually cause damage to my equipment.

Thanks again.

When you can get a UA-5 you will be very happy with the combo I am sure. I have run LSD2 and no C3s (same caps) into a stock UA-5 and I really like it.

Yeah, Run_Run_Run, the UA-5 is my next purchase....hopefully a busman T+ modded one at that.
Do you go optical out of your UA-5 and Into your iriver?

Just for the heck of it:
- plug the Rolls into the LSD2, and then the Y cable which will go between the Rolls and the H120, but DON'T plug it into the H120.
- Power up the rolls, and use a voltmeter to check the across the contacts of the miniplug where it will plug into the H120.  You want to make sure there isn't 48VDC phantom voltage or something like that at the miniplug.
- I know this wouldn't be a problem with a Denecke PS-2, but I'm not familiar with the rolls.
- If there is substantial voltage here, don't plug it into the H120!

If you are interested, I have an Denecke PS-2/AD-20 set that I'm not using much.  If you want to borrow it for a little while until you get the UA-5 we can probably work that out.  I only ran it a couple of times with the LSD2, but it sounded great when I used it.  Runs optical into your H120 perfectly.  You pay postage both ways, which from US to canada will cost more than it should.  PM me if interested.

Optical out to iriver and/or USB 24bit to a thinkpad

I will add my 2 cents here, take Joe's offer but use the pb224 infront of the ad-20, I used to use that combo and it will save postage since you already have a phantom device, all you need is a couple of shorty xlr's. to go from the 224- ad-20 and you will make great tapes!

Thanks for the info and offer SmokinJoe!  I don't have a voltmeter at the moment so I think I'll just hold off on connecting the rolls to my iriver until I can get one.  I really appreciate you offerring to loan me some of your gear....I'll pm you if I decide to try that route and we can work out the details.  Super cool of you!

Shayne, your suggestion makes sense, too....thanks for trying to save me some $!

Cheers guys.

Using A set of transformers (hosa mit-176) between phantom > recorder will give you enough gain.

Hmmnnn, never thought about that before.  Thanks Kindguy. Might be worth a look into how much I can get a pair of 'em for until the day that ua-5 enters my life.

Nice.

Think you can get them modded with rca tip from oade for about 20 bucks each.

Yeah, this seems like an relatively inexpensive route to go. Maybe some will show up on the ys sometime soon, too.

Thanks again Kindguy!

Here's a follow up question, since I own a CA9100 preamp, am I able to go: LSD-2 (or BSC1) > PB224 > CA9100 > Iriver?  If so, would I need a special cable to go between the PB224 and the CA9100 or would a regular (2)XLR male > 1/8" suffice?  I'm hoping that this arrangement will provide me with a means of powering the mics and providing some gain to the recording.

Thanks.

Probably, but ask Chris Church, don't take my word for it.  The 9100 puts out some "plug in power" voltage, and it's slightly possible that there is something in the Rolls which would burn out the 9100 with extended usage.

Yeah, I guess I should ask Chris since he'd best understand his product.
Thanks Joe.

Maybe this is well-known here already, but if you're using input transformers, you need to be sure that your signal cables go from their outputs directly into the line inputs that you want to drive, and are as short as possible--less than three feet long for sure.

This is to avoid high frequency losses due to the capacitance of the cables. Step-up transformers don't just step up the voltage; they also step up the source impedance of your microphones by the square of the turns ratio.

Thanks DSatz, I didn't know that.

Slight threadjack: what battery do you use to the PB224, and how much time does it give you on phantom?

It runs on two 9-volt batteries, but I have yet to actually use the thing, so I not sure of the phantom run time.

Still waiting for a reply from Chris Church as to the PB224-to-9100 compatability question.

Just heard back from Chris Church, he can't see any incompatability issues between these two units.
