I'm on a Mac and need to recommend a RAR utility for a friend who uses Windows. Free and easy would be nice...

WinRAR is only a trial, you'll have to pay for it eventually. For a free (and open source) utility, I like 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).

7 Zip is a wonderful utility that I recommend to everyone. It handles all the popular data file compression formats. I think its also a noticeable bit faster handling zip and rar files. For the most part I have completely switched over to the .7z format.
