Title: D50 or R09-HR ? (cca preamp, MM-HLSC-2)
Post by: Tom Joad on November 30, 2008, 05:29:25 AM
Hi,

I am considering to replace my Zoom-H2 / CCA preamp / MM-HLSC-2 gear for stealth taping rock concerts.

I think I have these options:

1) MM-HSLC-2 -> CCA preamp -> R09-HR
Keeping the CCA preamp and using the Edirol R09-HR.

2) MM-HSLC-2 -> Sony D50
Buying the Sony D50 and using the internal preamp.

Actually I would prefer the 2nd option because I would have to carry onle one device with me, although the D50 is significantly larger than the edirol.

So my questions:

Q1) Is the D50 internal preamp better than chris church's preamp?

Q2) Would I need a battery module for option 2 (MM-HSLC-2 -> battery module -> Sony D50?

I appreciate any recommendations  :)

Not sure about the D50, but when I ran my MM-HSLC-1 > Sony Mini-Disc I always had problems with distortion if I ran the levels to high.  Things improved greatly once I switched to a battery box and R-09.

Just curious. Why do you need a preamp for (option1), if you're going to tape loud rock concerts?
The HLSC-2 is a pretty hot (output) mic. You just don't need a preamp for loud music, just your BB.
For stealth purposes, I'd pick option 1.
Take care

I have an R-09 and D-50 with a CA-9100.  I always use the external pre.  It's more gear, but I am not satisfied using the pre in decks.  I don't believe the decks properly power our mics either, so you'd need at the very least a BB.
