I haven't used this yet, but it's a beast!

"You can rename files, substitute some or all of the file name, apply numbers and lettering, swap extensions, append with time and date stamps, rename based on image EXIF data and audio ID3 data, and all that just scratches the surface." - Lifehacker
I guess it also has a quick preview feature, to make sure everything will turn out the way you wished. And it's freeware.

Thanks for the tip. I'm a mac user, but I've been looking for a utility like this for my XP-running friends.

Name It Your Way is another freeware app that does this.

Interface is not quite as busy as some of the others are. I've been using it for about a year now with good and easy results.

Two great opportunities to shoot your feet full of holes. Do they have and "undo" option? Hopefully.

I'm sure you have one, Tom, but I can recommend two more for Mac users - NameChanger (http://web.mac.com/mickeyroberson/MRR_Software/NameChanger.html) and NameMangler (http://www.manytricks.com/namemangler/)

On the mac, I use the Util> Batch Rename feature in xACT 1.64 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14246) for most renaming, and R-Name (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14404) when I need to do search and replace or start the numbering from a number other than 01.
