Title: Transfer of 32kHz DATs

Anyone have recommendations for properly transferring DATs that were recorded in 32kHz (SP or LP mode) over to the PC?

Here is the equipment I have available:

Sony R300
Tascam DA20
Sony D100
Edirol R-09
Audiophile2496 (recording w/ Audacity)

Any help would be greatly appreciated so that I could transfer, archive, and share some older DAT clones that were recorded in 32kHz for whatever reason.

I had the same issue and ended up using analog out to a moded UA-5.  I could not get a lock on the digital signal using coax from Sony R500 to a Edirol R-44.  The DaP1 will not play LP(32hz)tapes.  For you Sony300 to Audacity may work best, Kirk

You might want to try a Panasonic deck - according to the DAT-Heads FAQ, the Panasonics supported a 16-bit, 32kHz mode (instead of the usual 12-bit mode). See the "What's the rundown on Long Play mode?" blurb at http://solorb.com/dat-heads/FAQ.html

You could look for a used Entech D/A converter on fleaBay --- those lock onto 32khz well, and are pretty good sounding for cheap........

Your easiest option, and honestly probably not going to make a bit of difference audio-wise, is to go out the analog output on the R300, and into your soundcard. You already have the gear, no need to buy a thing and my experience with 32K DATS is that you can't tell a difference between an analog transfer and digital transfer.

Well, heads-up on the 32KHz standardS - The Panasonic and Sony decks handle them differently. See part 19 of the above link for a description of the differences.

Thanks all for the suggestions.  I should have clarified that I was not looking to buy more equipment since I've got more than enough right now.  I'm leaning towards going R300>Audiophile using the RCAs for now...

FWIW - DAT2WAV and an Audio capable DDS drive can rip 32Khz DATs to the PC
