i know this has been answered but searching i couldn't find what i am looking for
MT 1 - how does it work with mics plugged directly into it vs having a battery box
does the mt1 supply enough power to sound good?
where should one put the switch on the side?
thanks

The plug in power at the 3.5mm input is not enough to prevent distortion in loud situations. The first recording I made was using straight plug-in power and the lows in the recording were very distorted. You need 9v.
The only switch for providing phantom power is the 48v switch for using the 1/4" jacks. However, the MT1 has a switch for line/mic, which if you're using no preamp, run mic in.

thanks, guess my plan wouldn't really work anyway

As a backup rig I've ran my CA mics right into the MT. They didn't overload or distort. I ran them straight into the 1/8" (3.5mm) jack using Line In, not mic. Sample here;

I wouldn't run your 853's this way though, they need more juice.

It is not a switch for line/Mic, but a switch for Low/Medium/High. This feature was improved on the MT2 which just takes you through the whole scale by taking you through the entire range using the controls on the front.
A really good review/comparison of the MT 24/96 and MT2 is posted here:
