I have a bunch of decent videos I have taken with my digital camer, but the files are HUGE
Does anyone have any suggestions on PC applications (free or buy) that will down sample the video to a more manageable file size to make it easier to upload to Youtube?

If you like to tinker around with different codecs and try to optimise the conversion, then take a look at "Super"

if you have windows movie maker, you can chop and down convert files really quickly and its very easy to use for small projects

I use VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.

It's free and has some good editing features like adding filters, resizing, joining clips, and adding different audio to what's in the original vid. Also a bunch of different compression settings that allow you to save the file at a reduced size (albeit lesser quality).

From the little I had played with this, it is a very cool program but I haven't figured out how to export to a video file yet. I will one day!

It's a little confusing, but take a look at this screen shot:
1. Drag the file you want to convert into the box at the bottom of the screen.
2. Select the desired "Output Container" (AVI should be fine for most cases)
3. Select the desired"Video Codec" (MPEG-4)
4. Select the desired "Audio Codec" (MP3)
5. Select the desired Resolution of the file (No change will keep the resolution the same as your original file)
6. Select the desired Frame Rate (25 for PAL stuff, 29.97 for NTSC)
7. Select the desired video bitrate (experiment until you find a figure that looks alright)
8. Select the desired audio bitrate
9. Press the "Encode (active files)" button at the bottom of the screen.
The video will now start to convert and a new file will be stored in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\eRightSoft\SUPER\OutPut
Super has an infinite number of settings, so experiment to find the ones that work the best for your footage. :)

I really appreciate your help with this. I figured out how to drag, drop, change settings but I had no idea what happened after you press encode since I didn't know the path it saved to. I'll see if any videos ended up in the path you listed.
What I'm interested in doing is dragging and dropping say 500 photos into the encode box and then an mp3/mp4 as well to have an image sequence play. I know quicktime pro can do this but can this program?

I don't think Super can create slideshows from JPG images. I just tried and wasn't successful...
You probably should download an application that's specifically designed for that sort of thing.
