Greetings All,
A good friend of mine recommend I check this site out before I buy a digital recorder to record my mixes. I was looking at the Edirol and the Microtrack - both to me have there strengths, but I have concerns with both of them.
But before we get into that a little background:
My mixers are made with Vinyl records and the mixer I'm using is a Vestax 05pro III (the mixer only has rca outputs)
My requirements:
- Clean full frequency recording (in other words, WAV uncompressed audio)
- Competitively priced
- I will also be using this recorder to also convert some irreplaceable tapes I have collected over the years
- The recorder will also be used to record my radio shows from a 1/4 headphone out (not the best source yes, but I'm working with what is available to me)
I was strongly in favor of the Edirol but was concerned about the 1/8 input? Will recording from my mixer produce lower quality recordings then the Microtrack with the dual 1/4 TRS?
Also I understand that the new Microtracks produced audible clicking when using unbalanced sources - as my sources will mostly be unbalanced what would you recommend? And what can I do to get around this limitation?
Considering my requirements and my equipment what would you suggest. Feel free to suggest a better recording solution then the ones I have looked into.

Your requirements are very minimal compared to most people here so both recorders work fine, IMO.
Since, as you noted, the 09HR does not have 1/4" inputs, you have to use 1/4 to 1/8. Most people do not find this to be a problem and since the cable exists, it really is not an issue. Now if you were running around and had the possibility of the cable being unplugged, perhaps you should consider the more secure and professional connection, XLR.
I have the 09HR and love it. I don't think you will be let down by it at all.

I guess my real question would be does the type of input / connection matter when recording? From what I understand the 1/8 on the edirol is a mic input not a true line input? Does this mean it will effect the sound quality?
Like I said I'm open to other portable recorders or other solutions.

The edirol is a true line input you still might have to attenuate a bit on your mixer depending on where its line inputs are pro DJ mixers are +4 but most have a switch for -10 db the edirol will work great for this application get the R09HR because the preamps are so much better. Another great recorder for your application would also be the tascam DR-1

I was reading some of the used equipment for sale on this site most mention that the input is still intact is there a history of the Edirol inputs going bad?

Some people broke the imputs on the R09 but as far as I know the new edirol R9-HR does not have this problem. If you arent moving it around much, IE cramming it in your pocket while stealthing, it shouldnt really matter.

I can say 100% that the problem with bad inputs has been fixed with the new edirol.
